So the girls in my neighborhood set the date for a Safari. I was so happy to join this wonderful adventure with them. (Yesterday Morning)

DSC_7544

While I don’t know this little gal up in the front, I was totally smitten with her.

DSC_7401

They call it “WILD” for a reason. Twas fun watching the animals kick up some dust while claiming their ground.

DSC_7497

It’s fun to watch these guys at mealtime.

DSC_7409

It was a treat to see this 38-year-old White Northern Rhinoceros out for a stroll. She is one of the 7 left in the world. It’s sad this species is going extinct, right before our eyes.

Bit of trivia, she has lived past her life expectancy of 35 years and still going strong.

DSC_7473

You never know what you will run into on a stroll thru the park.

DSC_7390

there was something about her sweet face that I just had to capture.

DSC_7393B

We learned a bit about owls too. Did you know the owl has 14 vertebrae in their neck? That’s twice as many as we have.

Did you know the owl’s eyes are fixed? And the great thing about having 14 vertebrae in his/her neck is that it allows them to spin their head all the way around.

Have you any idea by looking at his size how much he would weigh? I really thought this bird would be quite heavy. Turns out, he only weighs in at 5 pounds. He truly is made with a lot of feathers.

DSC_7592

More Safari adventures to come, I’m sure. But this is all for now.

Heron, We Have A Problem – The Egret Has Landed

One of the things we’ve known about having outdoor fish as pets, is that trouble could lurk. Ok, trouble more than likely will lurk. No, take that all back, trouble WILL in fact lurk. And if we’re not careful, a really big problem could arise. And the fish could be no more in a matter of days.

As we’ve heard, birds are the biggest threat.

And yesterday morning, the egret landed in my arms from FedEx. I could not get him out of the wrapping fast enough. As we needed back-up “Right Away”!

Standing at a whopping 41″ tall, I’d say he looks pretty cool and real to life. Don’t you think?

DSC_6990B

So, the hubs ordered the egret as a decoy. As we know, birds do not share space while hunting for food. And we learned that a large statue of an egret would send a heron flying for the hills.

I love that the hubs is all about protecting our babies. The Egret stands as Top Cover and more reinforcement is on the way. The hubs also ordered a Scarecrow Motion Activated Sprinkler.

The cool feature about the scarecrow, is that it will blast the bejeebers out of anything that moves. I’m fond of the motion sensor feature with an unexpected noise. It’s harmless, but quite effective to any creäture who dare crosses the line.

All the above to say, we had our first encounter with a heron on Monday, just 4 days after our fish arrived. As good luck would have it, I so happened to hear something coming in for a landing. Right there in front of me he was there, a huge heron! And I yelled “GET OUT OF HERE!”

Now, I’m not one to yell, but when it comes to protecting, I surprised myself. And that would be a first that I have ever yelled at a heron on my patio or anywhere for that matter.

That guy (I don’t even think he fully landed) went, up, up and away as if his dear life depended on it! Don’t tell him, but I would never do anything to hurt that beautiful creature. Just for kicks, do you know that harming one of these guys could result in as much as a $10,000 fine? So yea, I’m going to play, but play nice.

I scared him enough that he didn’t dare come back the rest of the day.

Tuesday – I was ready for the heron, as I had a feeling he would return. And return he did. I was out on the patio when I heard him coming in for a landing, so I gave him another tongue lashing.

And over he flew and landed in the neighbor’s yard. (Grin) I don’t see much for him to feed on in the neighbor’s backyard. It’s time to move on, young man/lady.

While he did move on, he was back later in the afternoon. But he still could not get past me. I’m learning that I make a pretty darn good blocker, all by my lonesome.

DSC_6697B

After guarding and protecting the last couple of days, I could hardly wait for the back-up to arrive.

Wednesday = yesterday, the pond was armed and dangerous. VERY dangerous with our brand spankin’ new 41″ egret. Reference the first picture up above. He’s worthy of another little peak.

And just like clockwork, the heron was back!

I could feel the blood race thru my body and my heartbeat was more than just a regular beat. And I was on edge as I watched from inside.

Don’t mind the picture quality of the shot below. It’s just the shot I was able to get looking out from the dining room and thru the screen door and share the proof that he’s been here.

Can you tell he’s scared?

No?

Me neither. Other than the fact that he didn’t dare come any closer.

DSC_6974

The heron trolled the mid to upper backyard for nearly 30 minutes. I was the eye from the house looking on as I didn’t want to disturb his behavior. I had to see who was going to win, the “fake” egret or the heron.

May I insert that I had little faith in our fake egret. I really expected some sort of bird fight. And I knew the heron would knock the fake egret over with one swift blow to the head with his long gigantic bill.

For starters, let’s just say, the fake egret did not flinch! He stood his ground. And he made me proud.

But the heron, on the other hand, had some funky movements going on with his very long neck, but he didn’t dare move in.

I could see defeat when the heron lifted up and over to the neighbors backyard where he stayed another 30 or so minutes waiting on the egret to leave.

I have to hand it to the heron, he was one very patient bird, but the egret has patience that will outlast the hunger of the heron.

And one more thing. I played with the heron’s head, I did. I moved that egret 3 x’s yesterday. I hear you’re supposed to move them around, as herons will get wise to one standing in one place for months on end. The pond man told me to move him around at least once every 2 weeks.

So in my mind, I’m playing a game with that heron and he’s going to learn that my fake egret means business.

Just wait ’til the hubs gets his scarecrow motion sensor sprinkler. We will have the safest fish on the block. No worries little babies, we got ya covered.

Around the Pond

Good Day!

It is a beautiful good day.

I would like to give a little update on the goldfish.

Let me just say, they are coming around. I mean, really coming around. And they seem to be getting to know us.

They no longer “dart” for cover when we approach the pond.

They are beginning to feel freedom and it’s obvious for us as they now play and make quite a splash as we look on.

And each morning when I feed them breakfast, I count all 10 of them.

DSC_6935B

And I count all 10 of them when I’m not feeding them. And I count all 10 of them each time I visit. I can’t help but want to know that they are all safe and doing well.

We are quite smitten with our babies and find them to be an extra special addition to our home.

Peaceful Weekend

Our weekend blossomed with peace, quiet, birds chirping and fish splashing.

The hubs found just the right spot to install our flagpole.

DSC_6676B

And Old Glory proudly waves in our new backyard.

DSC_6690

It’s a colourful Monday here at the house.

With the pic below, I like how the water movement lends to an abstract image. I also like the 105mm used for this shot.

DSC_6656B

We had the electrician over this morning to provide a lot of goodies for our home. I especially like how the hammer drill made work look like fun.

Happy Colourful Monday and the best to all of you this week.

Well Worth The Wait

I dreamed of having our very own pond for over a decade. It’s a dream I never dreamed would come true.

But as you know from previous posts, dreams do come true.

And now that we’ve settled into our home, with a pond, void of fish, it was time to do something about it. The hubs has been nearly as excited to have fish as me. And that makes me so very happy.

And now, after (nearly) 14 years of dreaming, fish and plant life were introduced into our lives this morning.

DSC_6518B

I was nervous as I drove home, with my car full of life.

Nervous, as I wondered if I had the knowledge necessary to care for everything.

Jitters fluttered thru me, as I could not wait to introduce our beautiful pets to their new home.

From observing their previous living quarters, I had a gut feeling that the guys and girls would love their new digs.

DSC_6527B

These are the pets that make my “pet” world complete. And I’m having the hardest time getting anything done. Other than watching over them.

DSC_6540B

In my dreams, I’ll be dreaming of morning.

And dreaming of the next time I get to visit our beautiful pets.

I feel so blessed. And yes, these guys were well worth the wait.

Hope I can get some sleep tonight.

I Felt Less Than A Flower

When I didn’t want to get up and go to class today. We (the hubs and I) have so many exciting things on our plate and the last thing I wanted to do today, was go to school.

I’m a little shocked at myself as I love my class. This semester ROCKS! I have the best teacher! And the things I’m learning in class blow my mind.

But it was just one of those days where I just wanted to stay home.

I’m so happy my hubby knows me well. He knew if I skipped class, that I would beat myself up for it. So he talked me into going. Thank you, My Love!

I felt less than a flower when a gal tailgated me for miles on my way to class. I couldn’t shake her from my bumper for the life of me.

I felt less than a flower when a student picked an argument with me over a term I used. The frustrating thing, is the term I used had nothing to do with the point I was trying to make. It was just a word in my sentence. Wish I had used another word before I got to the point I was trying to make. The other frustrating thing about the whole thing is – that student interrupted the conversation between me and another student. Interrupted me while I was trying to talk to the other student. And completely had me frazzled before class even started.

I felt less than a flower when I had a difficult time understanding a procedure during lab today. At that point, I had completely shut down. I could have burst into tears, as the wall holding them back nearly broke.

There were a couple of other things that happened, things that made me feel less than a flower. But I can’t think of a good way to spell it out on the blog.

Indeed, I felt less than a flower. I felt more like a weed.

To make things better, my buddy Sarah and I set out on a photography shopping trip. We had a nice lunch date. And completely chilled and enjoyed our visit. It was refreshing.

I may have felt like a weed today, but what makes me bloom is when my dearest catches wind that I had a difficult day. He just called to listen, as he wanted me to tell him all about it. He’s the best!

It’s days like this that make me realize that no matter what, I have friends and the dearest husband who really care.

It dawned on me when I got home, to shoot a picture of a weed. It’s how I felt. So I went out searching for my very own personal weed. I love what I discovered blooming amongst the thorns and thistles. In fact, I had to mush out all the thistles and weeds surrounding this beauty to get this shot.

You know how you know, when something is right? When you feel it in your gut that this is it? That’s exactly how I felt when I discovered this guy. Made my heart sing.

DSC_3948

I may have felt like a weed most of the day, but I’m thankful to enter the afternoon and evening on such a happy note.

A Moment Of Prayer

Heartbreaking news today – Taking time out to pray for families and many who have experienced great loss…

This heart ornament is extra special (given to me from the man I’m deeply in love with) as I want to keep the ones I love tucked ever close to my heart.

Balboa Park – Part II

A day at the park over the weekend was nothing short of amazing.

I was with “Sarah and Jeremy” my new photography friends. They taught me so much. Things like – knowing when and when not to take pictures of a bride and groom. Especially when their photographer is taking shots. I couldn’t resist this.

This guy was with the “Hare Krishna” group. I forced him out of his tent told him I was in a photography class and asked if he would kindly let me take some shots of him. He gladly left his tent and stood where I asked him to stand. What a nice guy.

This gent is playing a didgeridoo. It’s quite the instrument.

While I was in my own world, shooting the man playing the didgeridoo, this little girl was standing in front of me wanting her picture taken.

I had no clue. But when my friends “Sarah and her hubby” filled me in, you have no idea the utter joy I had taking shots of her.

So this (face painting) lady (wearing a Hello Kitty hat and a Hello Kitty ring) was giving Sarah’s hubby an attitude for taking her pic. Yup, I caught her attitude on camera. Funny thing is, he was getting grief for taking her pic and here I was snapping for the same reason she was scolding him.

Then she asked him for some money in exchange for shooting her. He was really nice and gave her (I’m sure) more than she expected.

Then she offered to paint his face.

Here’s the final product. Great job! May I add he had to be the most patient guy allowing the Hello Kitty lady with an attitude to paint his face.

You should have been with us at the Starbucks (after our afternoon in the park) Downtown San Diego. Jeremy got heads to turn. P.S. He counts as a stranger as I just met him that day.

Here we have “elf on a shelf” er “Santa’s Helper”. He’s the caricature dude. He was all set up right next to the Hello Kitty face painting lady.

And somehow he conned Jeremy into a caricature drawing with his new and improved face paint.

Here’s the elf on a shelf is directing Jeremy to give the primal face expression to go with his new face paint job. This shot just cracks me up. Guess you had to be there.

And this wraps up my final exam shots. The last six shots in black and white are the ones I’m using for the exam.

I hope it goes well.

It’s Tuesday

Good Day my friends.

It’s Tuesday to be exact. I’m sure you don’t need the reminder. But for me, Tuesday is the day before I get my next weekly photography assignment.

Most weeks, I sit on the edge of my seat while I wait for the next fun assignment. But this week, I’m not so sure how I feel about getting the next assignment,

Our syllabus reads that there will be some sort of three page report. I’ve been doing a little research and studying for my report, but I truly hope he skips that assignment as we are already one week behind this semester.

In honor of hoping with fingers crossed that we get to do photography instead of a report. I took a little stroll thru the garden to warm up.

I practiced with this bee using the blur motion tools from this week.

Both shots (below) were taken at 1/4000 of a second. All I know is – one four thousandth of a second is a really FAST shutter speed!

I was able to capture the bee, as seen in the shots below.

I had a little fun in Photoshop with this shot. I gave it the oil painting look just for fun. See the bee making his way to the rose?

Today is also a catch up day around the house and a day to run errands if necessary.

  • My car was given (a little TLC) an oil change.
  • Laundry is in the works.
  • There may be a nap in the cards.
  • And I may have to top off the afternoon with a cup of coffee.

Tis a great Tuesday!

My Chops

What to say for myself?

Well, I got my chops handed to me today. And I thought you would like to know.

Funny, I had no idea my Dentist office would hand over the molds of my teeth in “stone”. They were made to make a guard to stop my grinding at night.

Tonight is the first night I “get” to wear the guard. I hope it turns out to be a joyous experience. I’m sure you don’t sense a hint of sarcasm in my tone.

My sweet Dental Assistant said it shouldn’t take longer than two weeks to get used to wearing it. Fingers crossed!

Back to my joy in receiving the molds, as seen above.

Have you any idea how excited I was to have them handed to me?

Do allow me to share. As I posted yesterday, our assignment (this week) is about light and texture. And I think this makes for a great shot to turn in. Do you suppose these will come as a surprise?

Don’t mind me, I’m having more fun than a barrel of monkeys. And some days I may seem a little off my rocker. I’ll be back soon with other fun findings.

Would you like to hear something else totally off the subject? I thought so.

Sometime around the noon hour, I went over to meet the hubs at the Firestone Tire place. He was going to have his allignment done while we went out to lunch. His appointment had already been made and his visit was legit.

Hubby goes to the counter.

Man Behind Counter:  Hello sir, how can we help you?

Hubby: I have an appointment to have my alignment done.

Man Behind Counter: What’s your phone number?

While hubby is giving the “Man Behind Counter” his number, Man Behind Counter picks up the phone and makes a phone call. I kid you not. No, the phone was not ringing, the Man Behind Counter, made a call. Yes, I repeated myself, it needed a repeat. It was not only rude but laughable.

Man Behind Counter finishes his call.

Man Behind Counter: What’s your number again? “No Joke”

Needless to say the hubs did not get off to a good start. Man Behind Counter Then went into the big “up sale” pitch…

Later they walk out to the hubs car. Man Behind Counter said to the hubs, “where did you get your tires? We could have given you a nice bargain.”

I forget what else the guy did that totally went against our grain, but the hubs kindly asked for his car keys back and we “hit the road” for a nice sit down lunch.

And just like that, Firestone lost two cars in need of alignment.

It turned out to be such a great date and we ended up laughing about the exchange that went down.

That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it!

One Last Hurrah

One thing is clear.  I’m not exhausted with this subject. I believe I could experiment another week and come up with a few more unique shots.

Note:  Both shots in this post were drastically underexposed (on purpose).  I was aiming for drama, I think I achieved what I was looking for.

The shot below, is my favorite shot of the week.

But I still have another shot to share.

In honor of this fun-filled week, here is one last shot.  A sign that this project has come full circle and time to give it a rest.

The shots in this post were not assignments this week.  They were taken with my heart, soul and a lot of pleasure.

That includes setting up an hour in advance.  As it took a bit of planning from the process the night before.  It was a big help knowing where the sun would set.  Finally, the tripod was set to the proper height, the camera was attached and practice shots were taken,  then uploaded to be sure everything was in place.

And one more thing.  There was a lot of anticipating for the moment the sun would drop.

I’m going to miss having my bank out there such that I can experiment, day in and day out.

But next week is a new week, time for a new assignment to wrap my brain around.

Blessings – Debbie

Britches

I couldn’t think of a better title, as I’ve used that word more than any other word in this post.  So there you have it.

There were a number of things I wanted to conquer today.  One being my toes.

They have not seen a pedi in over a month.  And they were in dire need of a little TLC.  This is not the time or place to share before pix.  You just have to trust me on this.

I love the blue polish I picked up at the grocery yesterday.  It’s just the “right” color of blue.

The name of this polish = Blue Me Away!  Yes, there is an exclamation point on the polish bottle after the name.  Seems fitting as it really blue me away!

While my toes were drying, I got busy on Google Reader and caught up with my reading.

Then I got busy throwing laundry from the washer to the dryer.

While busying myself around the house, I noticed little sprinkles on the surface of the pool.

And then I remembered that we forgot to put the grill cover back on from our BBQ last evening.

Then I realized I needed the camera.  What the camera has to do with covering the grill is beyond me.  I just wanted the camera with me when I stepped outdoors as I didn’t want to miss anything.

Perhaps it’s a good thing I brought it out.  Because this vine will be all trimmed nice and proper when the gardener comes over this weekend.

Look!

And then there were two.

I’m glad that there are times in life when goodness shows up.  Sometimes we have to be prepared and on the lookout.

When goodness comes, stop and enjoy the moment.

So the grill did eventually get covered.

The laundry is behind me.

My toes are finally dry.

I had a manicure as well.  My nails are pretty happy now that they are up to snuff again.

I made a run (in the car) to get new walking britches.  I love saying britches.  My grandma calls em britches and I love the word.

One time when I said britches to my step-daughter, she thought I was referring to underwear.  I hope she knows the difference now.

As I was saying, I got new britches and it turned into such a great experience.

Can you believe that this is the first I’ve replaced my hiking britches since I started losing weight?  Me neither.  I guess I have it in my brain that I do not want to buy every stinkin size as I go down.  So I just doubled my britches over in a couple of places and used safety-pins to hold them up.  I’m resourceful like that.

How fun will it be, in the morning, to put on my new britches, sans safety-pins?  It’s going to be epic!

Thoughts and Decisions

It’s been a day of thoughts and decisions.

There were moments when my mind played tricks on me.  But at the end of the day, I’m pleased to report, we have a winner!

As you know, I’ve been in deep thought over frames the last couple of days.

Pictured below are my current frames.  I like them.  I like them a lot.  They’ve grown on me.  But we’ve had our fair share of round and rounds.

This was my first experience with nose pads – I’m not a fan of them.

I like my frames to hug the top of my bridge – these guys want to ride down my nose.

The pads cause discomfort from time to time – I’m not a big fan of that.

And since I’m up for new frames, it’s time to find something a bit more comfortable.

After truly going back and forth with the two different frames, I pretty much selected this pair as the winner.

Sorry for the poor quality.  Photo taken with my cell in the store yesterday.

The style of this pair is similar to the pair I have. And at the end of the day, I’m not ready to let the style go.  I’m happy with my choice, but it wasn’t easy.

Finding something we like, that is attached to our head, every waking hour, can be such a difficult task.  Now I’m ready to move on.

FYI – I asked my FB friends to comment if they had a favorite between the two.  Turns out it was tie 9 – 9.  I found that interesting as it represents how I felt.  Torn.

A pic side by side of the frames.

Wedding Bells

A wedding to remember.  Hubby and I had the privilege of attending our nephews wedding.

On the morning of the wedding, the Bride went for a 5k run.  I just love the way she rolls.

Photos taken after her run.

I was up early to help the family/friends decorate the reception hall.  I got to help put the pretty purple sashes on the chairs among other things.  It was a lot of fun being involved.

After a few hours, our duties were over and the crew came in to take care of the rest.

Soon, hubby and I were “Johnny on the spot” to get over to the theater early.  Turns out, we were the very first to arrive.  We picked out our seats and listened to the beautiful music, while eagerly waiting for the ceremony to begin.

The minister told their love story from the top.  It was beautiful.  He shared the story from the Bride and the Groom points of view.

The Bride:  Walked up to this handsome man “a perfect stranger when they met” and said You’re so handsome.

The Groom:  She walked up to me and said “You’re Hot”.  And she eagerly helped enter her phone number in my cell phone.  And that’s the last time she’s known anything about electronics.

The Bride and Groom also read their own wedding vows to each other.  The Bride: Vowed to comfort her Groom (a St Louis Cardinal fan since birth) when the Cardinals lose and never root for the Cubs.

While I can’t remember everything, I do remember how their stories made us laugh and cry.  And how their love for each other filled the room.

It was such a beautiful day to watch these two love birds become one.

Soon it was time to make our way to the reception.  The tables so pretty as they were set for Kings and Queens.  And the meal was over the top amazing!

So way back at the church, shortly after hubby and I arrived, I leaned into him and said, “I’m looking for something funny to happen this evening”.  I think this picture of the Bride’s brother, says it all.  This was the intro of the wedding party arriving to the reception.  Need I say more?

Hubby and nephews visit.

The “First Dance”

We adore our family and their fun-loving ways!

Hubby and Nephew/Groom.

The lovely couple and little o me.

Me and my King.

And they danced thru the early morning hours.

The Bride and Groom the next morning.

The same pic played with a bit.  They are just too cute!

And they live happily ever afer.

Root Beer

It’s one of those drinks I love but rarely have.

In fact this last week is the first I’ve had one since the summer of 2009.  Yes, I remember, It was when I was invited to our neighbors home in NY.  And I was served my absolute favorite brand of Root Beer.  Stewart’s Root Beer to be exact.   Wish they sold them out here.

Then last week while food shopping, it was as though the IBC Root Beer couldn’t get into my cart fast enough.

So last week became my official Root Beer week.  While visiting my girlfriend, she served up a Shasta and then just the other day my Facebook friend in Germany mentioned having the treat of a Root Beer.  Just the words Root Beer sent me to the kitchen to pop the top of a fresh bottle.

This morning, I was down to my very last bottle.  And popped the top just because it seemed the thing to have on this beautiful Monday.

There was even a day over the weekend when I searched online the top brand names of Root Beer.  I had no idea there were so many highly rated brands.

A&W was what we had at home back when I was a kid.  Not often, but enough for me to remember exactly what all was involved in making our floats.  I don’t dare go down that float path, it could be very dangerous.

And today, Mug’s Root Beer made its way into our home.  I asked the question on Facebook “what’s your favorite Root Beer”?  I got a lot of IBC replies.  But one of my friends said “Mug’s”.  So Mug’s it is this time around.

This week alone, I’ve tried the IBC, Shasta and today Mug Root Beer.  And I have no clue which one is at the top.  Perhaps it’s time for a line of Root Beer shots.  Then again, after this next round, I think I’ll call it a day and let the Root Beer go away for a while.  But I’m sure enjoying it while it lasts.
