Hooked On My Kitchen

It’s Hooked On Friday’s and I’m hooked on building our new home and focusing my attention on the kitchen.

My pieces of (Korean Celadon) pottery arrived from Seoul South Korea yesterday. Oh what a delight!

Since my kitchen is decorated with green celadon, I was feeling a little on the nervous side of trying to figure out what color I want the walls painted. So I ordered some pottery since ours is locked away in storage.

Here’s a little leaf plate, I already have this exact same plate but in the large size.

And here’s the small peony plate to match the large one I have.

I figured I couldn’t go wrong ordering two plates as a girl can always make room for more, right?

And for a sneak peak of our counter tops.

I don’t have a sneak peak of our cabinets but they will be maple and will match the brown represented in the counters. I think the green pottery will pop with the darker cabinets but now I’m starting to waffle on the wall color as I originally wanted a light green.

I’m going back and forth on the flooring as I would like to go with wood but in a lighter color than the cabinets or shoot, I just may go with tile. There’s so much to think about when building a new home…any ideas for the wall color?

Hope you’re enjoying your Friday and don’t forget to check out Hooked On Friday’s, you too are welcome to join!

  1. You’re probably better off not painting the walls green — that way your green pottery and accessories will stand out better.

Look at how nice the plates look on the dark wood in the pictures that you posted — how about a similar shade of brown on the walls??

Have fun designing your new kitchen — lucky you!! 🙂

  2. I think Kelly is right, green walls would probably kill the impact of your lovely pottery, but a rich brown could look amazing.
In this case I suspect you are justified in procrastinating, and waiting to pick a wall color until your cabinets, counters and flooring are done. Depending on whether your kitchen is seen from adjoining rooms (family room? dining room?) you might want to echo some of the colors seen there too.

  3. Most places sell tiny cans of paint now for the specific purpose of seeing what you think. When we were building and I was having a hard time deciding I bought some of those, painted a section on the wall and looked at it in different light (after it had dried) and that helped me make the decision.

If you don’t want to paint it on the walls you could also buy a few of those inexpensive white posters we used as kids for school projects and paint those then just tape them on a wall to see what you think.

Does your computer program not allow you to play around with wall colors? That helped me a lot too.

  4. hmmm…I think I would go with a color very similar to your plates, particularly if yor plates will be showcased behind glass doors in dark cabinets.

I, personally would do wood in the kitchen over tile anyday! Tile can be loud, cold, unforgiving on your feet and legs…and everything breaks if it hits it. We want to put wood over our tile.

  5. Thank you ladies for all the exciting suggestions!

Mary Ellen, I’m totally with you as I can’t imagine not having that program to work with. I’m currently playing with many different colors in the program to get a better idea of what I think may look good.

Kelly I think you and I were on the same page. However when I play with brown on the walls in my Better Homes and Garden 3D program I’m not so sure about it.

Linda I keep going back to that green as that is really what makes my heart sing.

Stay tuned in the days to come and I’ll show examples of what the kitchen could potentially look like in a variety of colors.
