Weekend Update

Good Monday Afternoon! I don’t know about you, but the weekend seemed to go at record speeds.

I worked in the garden. The hubs worked in the garage. And when we came together at the end of the day, the hubs had both of our cars parked in the garage and he had all of his tools, workbench and such put in the 3rd car stall. And I had the fish pond all sparkly clean once again. The lily pads were cleared of all dead pads and any fallen leaves were cleaned out too. It was such a nice feeling of accomplishment.

But the most exciting part of our weekend was attending the annual neighbor block-party. All the neighbors (nearly 50 of us) gathered for hors d’ oeuvres, dinner, dessert and coffee. Our neighbor put on such a beautiful spread. All tables were covered with table cloths and dotted with pretty flower arrangements. It was another beautiful cool summer night to be outdoors, visit with neighbors and greet neighbors we had yet to meet. Torches were lit at dusk and we watched the sun set down over the mountains.

One neighbor mentioned that we need to get together on their patio one evening. And another neighbor said we should do dinner one evening. It’s a feel good feeling to be here.

I debated taking my camera to the party, I did. And since the party was held right across the street from our house, I thought I had ample time to get it should I decide to take pictures. As it turned out, as much as I wanted to take pictures, I was having a bit more fun. And decided not to bother this time. Next time…

In other news, autumn is running heavily thru my veins. And I’ve had the craving for the Starbucks pumpkin spice latte for the last three days.

This picture has nothing to do with this post. It’s just one of the images I shot in the garden after it was hit by the morning sprinklers.

Sigh, In the news about Jury Duty. This is my last week to report…I hope. I had to call in again last evening. Was told not to report at this time, but to call again on Monday August 26th. That’s today. It’s been one of those months where I wonder each day if I’m going to have to report the next day. Only time will tell.

I’m not sure how many followers I have. And not sure if any of you recall my search for good health. Well I’m still rockin’ it! And I plan to post in the near future, to talk about this journey I started back in June 2011. And where I am today. And what direction I’m going. And where I see health in the future.

Until next time…

Arms of Love at the Root

The images in this post were inspired by the hubs doing something over the top special this morning.

DSC_3511

And it made him late for work.

This image says it all for me with the arms of love wrapped around the base of the tree.

DSC_3507B

And as he was getting ready to leave for work, he sighed and said “that was worth being late for”.

DSC_3521

I’m thankful for love at the root of it all.

Finding Myself

Hello peeps! How was your weekend?

The hubs and I enjoyed ourselves around the house as we found new projects to cross off the list. We enjoyed a wonderful “family day” BBQ, where the hubs works. They even had a couple of ice cream trucks on the property passing out “FREE” ice cream. I helped myself to two! Don’t judge.

As the hubs Monday morning alarm rang, I wasn’t quite ready to rise and shine. Perhaps it had something to do with having too much fun over the weekend. And staying up way past my bedtime last evening.

At some point each morning, this is the place I find myself, as I give a cheerful “Hey Babies” while feeding these guys.

DSC_3348B

After a nice visit at the pond, I grabbed my camera to go shoot some stuff around the house.

This set of old birdhouses (all nailed together as one unit) left by the previous owners has had my attention. They were left all forlorn on the far upper terrace of the backyard.

And one day, I want to make this my project. My wish is to sand the unit down and give each house a bright beautiful color. I have high hopes that it will take on the color of the entire crayola crayon box. And something tells me this will be such a fun project.

DSC_3413B

All sorts of flowers are in bloom this time of the year. I really don’t know what this is, but I find it so pretty.

DSC_3428B

Today was one of those relaxing days. A day to find myself. A day to regroup. A day to get lost in thought of where I would like to start the next project.

Of course I would like to paint and get down to the big projects. But, I’ve been on Jury Duty call for the last three weeks, actually this makes my third week with one more to go. I had to call in last evening and then was prompted to call back again this evening. With this in mind, it’s hard to jump into a big project, as I don’t want to leave a mess undone for too long.

So while I’m on Jury Duty call, look for me to be kicking around with smaller projects or just finding myself.

A Month of Stuff

Where did the month go? Tomorrow will be a month since I last posted. And things continue to move at record speed.

So like the last post, I’ll begin where I left off. I’m using the images and comments I posted on Facebook and going by the date. Off we go!

July 15 – Image from the pond this morning – There are times I get the tendency to get really excited. Especially when this gal landed. It’s hard to tell in the picture, but she’s the biggest of the dragonflies I’ve seen yet. I believe she was laying her eggs and was not pleased with me.

Having a nice Monday ~ a little lunch date with the hubs ~ a little reading on the patio ~ and taking care of the babies. We went from 10 fish to well over 50 fish in our pond. Happy Monday Peeps!

DSC_0849B

July 16 – On Yer Mark, Get Set… – I’m having a lovely Tuesday. Fish watching and dragonfly watching and bird watching = Oh My!

DSC_0415B

July 17 – Nature Weeps – The image today is honoring the little baby fish I put to rest today. I found the little 1 and 1/2 inch guy on the bottom of the pond during my morning cleaning of the pond. Cause of death – It appears a larger fish was hungry for protein.

1017292B

July 18 – Joy Comes In The Morning – We woke to the fish spawning this morning.

DSC_1467B

July 19 – Having a beautiful day – It’s the hubs friday off ~ we have a friend coming over for a visit ~ It’s another breakfast, lunch and dinner on the patio kind of day + another female is spawning this morning. Happy Weekend!

July18B

July 20 – Fish Lips – Good Morning to those on the west coast and Afternoon for you on the east coast.

I would like to spend more time taking images of these guys at meal time. They are so much fun to watch.

DSC_2074B

July 22 – Capturing things around the pond is such a delight. This is one of the images I snapped this morning.

It’s a busy day – Paid a visit to The Home Depot – Picked up two different samples of paint color – Picked up a nice paint brush – Sampled both paint colors – Made my selection – Finished applying the paint from one of the samples to the walls in the kitchen – Allowing paint to dry for a final decision – And hopefully we’ll have a fresh painted kitchen tomorrow! Happy Monday!

DSC_2855B

July 23 – Somebody’s touching me – I thought it was pretty cool to watch these two fight over the same post yesterday. And then the funniest thing happened. That blue dude landed right smack dab on the orange guy’s wing…

DSC_2400B

July 26 – Chillin’ – So the last four days, I managed to paint the kitchen and dining room. Well, almost, I’m almost finished. But for today and the weekend, all paint brushes, rollers, paint and equipment are on strike until further notice.

Just for today – I managed a nap – laundry in the works – fish/pond sitting – Tea infused with honey sipping – and enjoying our new paint color. Happy Friday and the best to all of you this weekend.

DSC_2872B

July 31 – We celebrate our 14th commitment to love and to cherish each other for life. As the hubs sat across the dinner table, he said “I still remember the first time I saw you across the room”…And we reminisced from the time we first met 17 years ago. This has been an amazing journey and I’m blessed to spend all my days with my very best friend. There truly is no place I’d rather be.

This image was taken in the backyard after our anniversary dinner.

DSC_3055

August 7 – Question ~ Can anyone tell me what this creature is? He/She lives in water as I just scooped him/her out of the bottom of the pond this morning. And scooped many others out the other day. And it’s no more than 1/2″ in size.

Note: I discovered after posting this image that he/she is dragonfly naiad! Remember all the dragonflies I shot while laying their eggs? Well here’s one of many babies I scooped out (not knowing)…

DSC_3132B

August 7 cont… – In other news, It’s been crazy ~ fun ~ busy around here the last couple of weeks. I’ve been to book club ~ To a dinner party with the hubs ~ Neighborhood picnic with the hubs last weekend ~ Getting ready to have a few neighbor girls over tomorrow morning for coffee on the patio ~ Having fun with painting the “inside” of the house ~ spending quality time with the babies ~ fortunately, we’ve been able to keep the “big” birds out of the pond ~ All of the fish are still with us, sans losing a few babies ~ And the little fry are getting so big, some are over 2″ already ~ I can’t believe how fast they grow.

August 7 continued – Kitchen before and after images. Unfortunately, I did not think to shoot before images. The before shot was taken after I unpacked the kitchen boxes. So the lighting does not do justice to that dusty pink color. But the new yellow is so cheerful. Now to decorate the upper ledges on both sides of the kitchen…

KitchenBeforeAfter

August 9 – I had a guest back to back two days in a row. How fun to do round two for coffee on the patio with my new friend.

And that brings us to the weekend. The hubs and I enjoyed a nice weekend around the house. Trees were trimmed, the lily’s in the pond were divided up as they are getting so big – the garage was tended to and garage organization is well underway.

August 12 = Today already! My goal was to hit the grocery store first thing = check! Catch up on the blog = Check! And tidy up my office space = No check for that box, yet. But I still have the afternoon. And as soon as I hit “publish” for this post, I’m moving right along such that I can put a nice check in this box by the end of the day.

Blessings – Debbie

Things Happen

So the last couple of weeks, things happened.

And when things happen, I tend to get behind on the blog.

And then I really get behind on the blog.

So I would like to do a quick one post update. All right, there is nothing quick about this as there will be a smattering of pictures and material that range all over the place. So if you’re up for a smattering, please do scroll along with me.

And for this post, I plan to post the date with the pictures, to keep some sort of order to the post.

June 29th – The Jacaranda Tree – Enjoying the beauty of summer in the backyard.

DSC_7700B

June 29th – The little baby goldfish are hatching from the (first) spawn on June 20th. And the fake egret sort of got the name of the stork that day. And dragonflies gathered ’round for the grand occasion.

DSC_7858

June 30th – Happiness Is – Quality time with family. We had the joy of spending the day with my cousin and her beautiful family. We kicked back around the homestead and talked into the early morning.

This shot was a warm up shot for my little second cousin. I was taking her senior pictures that week too.

DSC_8048B

Side note for June 30th – The fish were spawning again that morning! Woo HOO!

July 1st – the hubs and I gave the family a grand tour around San Diego. First stop, Mount Soledad.

July 1st – Second cousins pose at the beach behind Hotel Del.

DSC_8216

July 2nd – Senior Pix of Liz underway!

LIZ384B

Can you tell we had a blast in the backyard?

Liz 098

And Jordan, I got to take pix of this cool guy too!

Jordan 012

He provided a lot of emotion and it was difficult to sort thru the nearly 2,000 images shot of the kids.

Jordan1B

And my little second cousin, do they come any cuter than this little guy? I tell you, he likes ice cream more than anyone I know. I think that’s how he got to be so sweet.

DSC_0202

July 4th – Beautiful weather to be outside – watching dragonflies – counting fish, I counted 11 little fry (that’s what little baby fish are called) on one end of the pond alone – keeping an eye on that heron (in the neighbors yard) – listening to music – enjoying time with the hubs – and thinking what a great time we are having with my cousin and family – feeling blessed.

DSC_0156F

July 5th – Our last evening with my cousins. He was all over those yummy ribs with very special BBQ sauce. The hubs was manning the other grill. Oh what a lovely evening spent together with good food, fellowship, outdoor dining and stories into the night.

DSC_0186

July 7th – Sunday – The Dragonfly Fun Facts – The dragonfly spends most of its life in the larva state (up to three years) – The adult winged stage only lasts a few weeks – Mating is the primary reason for their winged stage – So when you see a dragonfly, you know it’s toward the end of its lifespan – So this image is a female laying her young in the pond, see the splash? Not a perfect shot, but fun for me to observe these guys and girls daily.

DSC_0180

Monday July 8th – I never knew the many hours of enjoyment these guys and girls could bring. They’ve been with us going on 4 weeks and have spawned x 2. And I counted 20 + little fry (babies) on one end of the pond alone, the other morning. I still can’t get over how fast the fry are growing.

I think this has to be my favorite hobby of all time + I get to take pictures of them = my other favorite hobby of all time. That’s blessed x 2 if you were to ask me.

DSC_0275B

Tuesday July 9th – What the fuss is all about – I shot a fry, finally! Goodness, the little guys are so hard to capture. But now that they have at least tripled in size, the images are getting better. See him in the bottom left corner, above the lillypad?

It was such a lovely day for a visit on the patio with my dear friend Beth.

DSC_0500B

Wednesday July 10th – Distractions – Sometimes it takes awhile to get into a book, especially when distractions are all around. Like the sound of fish flopping, birds chirping and the constant desire to fish watch instead of read. But finally, I got into my (Book Club) book this afternoon. And was able to enjoy the great outdoors without too many distractions.

DSC_0525

July 11th – I talk to the fish – I recently learned that fish can get to know their owners better when you speak to them. As they learn the tone of their owners voice . So each morning I say “Good morning guys” and drift into chitter chatter with them.

So this morning as I was out with my skimmer net doing my daily morning clean up of the debris and fallen leaves, I was singing clean up – clean up to them. Yes, I’m off the deep end with these guys, and loving every minute of it.

When all of a sudden, I heard something “big” coming in for a landing. I spun around on my heals, and looked up to see a huge egret in the process of landing up in the top of the peppermint willow. You had to see me as I scurried over to the tree with my long skimmer net in hand while yelling “HEY” to the big bird in the tree. Apparently I talk to big birds too, just not with my happy voice.

DSC_0556

July 12th – My Favorite: Shot of the day = these two going after the same piece of food. Meal of the day = Lunch date with the hubs. Chore of the day = Having the food shopping checked off the list. Happy Weekend Friends!

DSC_0676B

And that brings me to today, July 13th. I have no image for today. But I do have good memories. Like talking to my dad on the phone, visiting with the hubs, fish watching (I counted 38 fry on one end of the pond this morning), catching up on a few things, more fun time with the hubs and even a little ice cream date this evening.

I’m thankful things happen. And I hope to continue capturing things, to remember the days, as they pass.

And just like that, I’m calling things up to date.

Blessings – Debbie

Upside and Downside

On the upside, I captured a shot of our babies the other day.

On the Downside, they were gone yesterday morning! They got big so fast and here I thought I would get to take pictures of them learning to fly away.

DSC_5867

On the upside, I find the flowers and my early morning strolls in the garden so refreshing.

DSC_6280 copy

On the downside, I failed to clean the filter/basket (for the pond/fountain water feature) the right way and I completely lost the prime on the pump/falls. It was a sad day as I was looking forward to bringing fish home today.

DSC_6315

On the upside, the hubs had the pump/fountain primed, once he picked up the tools needed at Home Depot.

And this shot was taken just before sunset.

DSC_6327

On the upside, I still get to pick up our fish this week.

On the upside, I’m so blessed the hubs cares about my dreams and wishes. So much so, that he insists on making it a priority without me asking.

I’d say the upside of the last few days is > the downside. And for that, I feel blessed.

Blessings – Debbie

Dreams Do Come True

For the last three years, soon to be 4, we’ve been renters. Very happy renters. Renters with no intention of purchasing a home until we felt reasonably certain we would be in one place for more than a couple of years.

For three + years we rented. Not something we’re used to, as we’ve been homeowners every stop along the way.

For three + years, we enjoyed the shoes we were in and it felt good to be free to go at a moments notice.

But we also had dreams to be homeowners again one day.

Our dream to become homeowners developed into a plan right before Easter. It’s then when the hubs and I were discussing the possibilities of becoming homeowners by the end of summer.

Things at the hubs work made a giant shift, for great things to happen. And it looks like we could potentially stay in beautiful Southern California for some time.

I’ll never forget that weekend. It’s the weekend I started searching Zillow. The weekend when I put the search for a home in full swing.

Yes, that was the weekend I found our home. It was a home listed “by owner”, of all things. I made the call, left a message. And sent an e-mail to the homeowner as well.

And don’t you know, the homeowner and I finally connected.

Now normally, I’m the scout and do all the leg work. Then when I “find” the place that I “think” we can call home, the hubs is brought in for a look-see.

Not this time, I said to the hubs “Honey, I can already tell that I want you to see the home.” I knew by looking at the pictures, (on-line) that I wanted him to see it too.

The hubs agreed. We would go on his Friday off and have a quick peak.

Good Friday, that’s the big day I’ll never forget. It was a day we had a major list of things to do. We had a road trip planned, and wanted to be on the road by 10AM.

So our appointment to look at the home was scheduled for 9AM. That should give us plenty of time to see the house and be on our way.

At 9AM sharp, we rang the doorbell. ~ I get choked up thinking about it.

The homeowners greeted us with genuine warm smiles, shook our hands and welcomed us into their home.

A lump developed in my throat at once. And I knew before looking at the house that it felt right in every way. I just knew.

But what was the hubs thinking? I had no clue.

We went from room to room and I felt “this is too good to be true”. The home had a brand new concrete roof, new copper plumbing all the way thru, granite counters in the kitchen and baths and a white kitchen.

I had dreams of a white kitchen here in the south. It truly was a little dream come true.

The home was naturally light and bright in the daylight and I felt a cheerfulness about it that tugged at my heart.

Since we were constantly with the homeowners, I was not sure what the hubs was thinking. After all, we had big plans for the day and buying a house was something we just started talking about.

And then we were escorted out thru the double sliding glass doors that led to the covered patio.

The garden was more than just a dream come true, it was my very own personal miracle.

Back up nearly 14 years ago. Then is when the hubs and I toured Asia. And it was then that I fell in love with Koi ponds and gardens.

And for the nearly last 14 years, I’ve jokingly asked the hubs for a koi pond one day. I’ve torn pictures out of magazines for nearly 14 years. And I have a book with clippings of beautiful koi ponds. And goodness knows how many koi pond ideas I’ve gathered from Pinterest and my Houzz app…

While I’ve had really big dreams of a koi pond “one day”. I never thought in a million years that my dream would come true.

Well don’t you know, this place came with a koi pond that far exceeded my wishes and dreams. Yes, dreams do come true. But this time, it’s bigger than a dream, it’s a miracle.

DSC_6140

Since living in So Cal going on 4 years, the hubs and I talked on and off that one day if we did buy, that it would be nice to have a yard with no grass to cut.

And don’t you know, there is not one blade of grass. It comes with beautiful plants and trees. And lovely winding stone paths with a series of steps that lead up and around the garden. Yes, dreams and miracles do come to pass.

But still, I wondered what the hubs was thinking. As you know, we had big road trip plans that day. And buying a house was not on the list of things to do. Just a quick peak.

DSC_6149

Privacy was one of the key factors on the top of our list. And this is the view from the sliding glass doors in the master bed.

The view we see without lifting our head off the pillow.

In fact, our first night in the new home I woke at 3AM and was wide awake looking out on this scene glowing in the moonlight until 6AM. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

BedroomView1

Once we finished looking at the property, the homeowners gave the hubs and me a chance to have some alone time.

The hubs looked at me and I looked at him and we knew we found the place.

And do you know we made an offer right then and there? But the funny thing the hubs said that I will never forget is this “well I really didn’t come to buy a house today, I just thought I was coming for a quick peak.” It’s something the homeowners will never forget either, as they remind us of those words every time we see them.

And we dropped our road trip and list of things to do in an instant. And enjoyed a nice cup of coffee and visited with the homeowners for 3 hours. 3 HOURS!

And made an appointment to be over to the escrow office, that afternoon, along with the homeowners.

And do you know, the homeowners fell in love with us. And we just adore them. And we have become friends. And the hubs had lunch with the homeowner before we bought the house. And they made brownies for us when we visited. And she stocked our freezer with meals and dessert as a treat when we were moving in. And we have an invitation to their upcoming housewarming party.

But before we became homeowners, I felt the shoe was going to drop. It all felt too good to be true. Even the day of closing, I was worried.

I suppose I worried they would sell it to someone else, as they were offered more than what we offered. Yes, they had another offer in shortly after us. But the couple liked us and wanted us to have it and told us flat-out that they would not engage in a bidding war. But I was still worried, as the bidding wars out here are killer! Especially now. And even tho we had a written contract, I still felt the shoe could drop at the last min.

When the closing finally took place, it was hard to grasp it all. After we moved in, it was still hard to grasp. But I’m finally coming around. And the hubs told me that I had better get used to it. Will it ever sink in?

It’s taken so long to tell the story and truth be told, I’m no longer waiting on the shoe to drop. Dreams do come true as we are blessed to be the caretakers to this place we now call home.

We’re grateful for the many blessings we’ve received.

Blessings – Debbie

Summertime Blessings

It’s official, it’s summer! And I’m completely wrapped in so much excitement that I can hardly contain myself.

For starters, we moved to a new home!

While we’re still getting organized, we’ve come to love the new outdoor spaces. The Koi pond lacks fish at the moment. But hopefully it will be ready for colorful life soon.

I’m enjoying the garden art the previous owners left.

Crazy Week of Diverticulitis

It’s been one of those crazy weeks. And it all started sometime during the night on Sunday.

It came swiftly thru the night and attacked my lower abdomen with a severe pain.

Monday morning, I didn’t say anything to the hubs, or anybody for that matter. As I thought to myself.

It has to be a very sore muscle, that sounds about right from the work I had done over the weekend.

As I put one foot in front of the other, the pain would not subside. I continued to tell myself all day, that it was just a muscle.

It was onwards and upwards to school, to work on my project.

477118_439571509468210_1846073960_o

That evening, I pretty much sat on the love seat nursing myself and still didn’t say a word to the hubs about it.

Nighttime rolled around and the rest came and went like waves. Rest a little, lay wide awake in pain as I tried to find a comfortable position. All the while wondering if morning would come.

Morning did come! And that is when I told the hubs all about it. Followed by saying “I think I’m going to call my Dr. right away.” The hubs said “Don’t mess around with that, call your Dr. as soon as the office opens.”

And so I did. And the nurse put me on hold and soon I was talking to my Dr. who thought it necessary to be on the phone with me. After asking a series of questions, she said. “I want you to go straight to Urgent Care and do not drive, have your husband drive you”.

As I was calling the hubs, he was getting into work. And he said “Hold on for just a few minutes, I’ll be right there.”

Back to the house he came, ready to do whatever he needed to do to get me back on my feet.

He ushered me into Urgent Care and from there Urgent Care sent me directly to the Hospital/ER.

The hubs took this shot just before my warm blanket arrived.

DebbieBlog

After the Dr. prodded in a few areas, the decision was made for a CT Scan.

And so it was, I had the hubs by my side, drank the fluids necessary, had an IV going and jumped thru the hoops necessary to have my very first CT Scan. Although I did put a stop to the morfeen they wanted to put into my system. I would much prefer the pain than to have that stuff making me sick to my stomach.

Then I was wheeled away to have a CT Scan look see. It wasn’t bad at all. But the die part was my least favorite. Die was pumped thru the IV and into my system. And the crazy taste and burning sensation all thru my body, even my tongue, was just a little too bizarre.

Soon we knew what was causing all the fuss. I had a case of diverticulitis. Description below taken from Mayo Clinic.

Diverticulitis (di-vur-tik-u-LI-tis) occurs when one or more diverticula in your digestive tract become inflamed or infected. Diverticula are small, bulging pouches that can form anywhere in your digestive system, including your esophagus, stomach and small intestine. However, they’re most commonly found in the large intestine.

Diverticula are common, especially after age 40. When you have diverticula, the condition is known as diverticulosis. You may never even know you have these pouches because they seldom cause any problems, such as diverticulitis.

So that diverticulitis is what has had my attention the last few days. But I’m happy to report it was this, rather than something else.

I’m following strict Dr. orders regarding what I eat. It can be a bit controversial when I see different opinions out there on the web. But I’m doing what I’m told as I would much prefer a bland diet as to have that pain anywhere near me.

Our Tuesday began at 8am with a phone call to my Dr. and ended at 4:30 when we left the ER. I was so happy the hubs insisted to be right there with me all day. I even tried to get him to break for lunch, but he had no part of that. He’s something else and I love him more than he will ever know.

The hubs even stayed home Wednesday to be sure that I was going to be ok. I’m on the mend and feeling so much better today. It is amazing what a lot of rest, meds and diet for this disease, will do for a body. Cheers!

And I leave you a picture from the garden, as it would not be right without a pretty shot.

A Smattering

I’m sorry to say, but this post is all over the place. Just wanted to let you know up-front.

It’s been a busy last three weeks.

A good but busy last three weeks.

An overwhelming last three weeks, as my classes are getting more and more involved. But I’m hanging in there. Learning a lot. And hanging on for dear life. Or so it seems when I get overload.

And really looking forward to summer.

This shot was taken on one of our drives/errand date filled weekends. 3 weeks ago ish? It’s a wonderful weekend to remember.

I love coffee and I love surprises – The hubs surprised me with this really cool thermos early April. Love the rubber grips + I really enjoying drinking out of this guy in photography class.

It appears we are going thru another downsize. It was time for the pool table and light to go. Thank you Craigslist for pulling thru again!

A lot of spring cleaning is in order this time of the year. But I took a rest in Photoshop to do a fun edit on this shot that I took weeks ago.

Below is one of the before and after shots I worked on in Photoshop class. The lesson called for us to use an old photo in need of help.

I’m thinking she is my Great, Great Grandma? The black and white on the left is the finished product.

There were many hours involved as the detail was brought back. If you enlarge the shot, you will notice the detail in her hair, face, hands, eyes, glasses, jewelry, buttons, folds in her dress and scarf and the detail on the chair. As well as touching up the background. This took upwards of 8 hours hand drawing the detail via mouse attached to the computer. I found this work therapeutic.

BeforeAfter

My latest assignment calls for stitching together 5 photos to make a large pano. This is just one of the 5 to be stitched together.

I can’t wait to see how this looks with all the pieces in place.

So today I worked a bit more from a different place. I like this spot.

I particularly like how the sun only sprinkled the wild flowers with golden light.

This fallen tree caught my eye.

As did this flower.

And just like that, I’m calling the blog caught up. Whether it’s all caught up or not. And I feel a great sense of relief getting this off my chest. And I feel a little guilty that this post is harsh and broken into many directions. But it’s a little reminder of some of the things I/we’ve been up to.

The things that make me happy today.

  1. I went to the grocery for the second time in two days. I know, right? But I’m happy to have the ticket item (I forgot yesterday) for the hubs tonight.
  2. Laundry is nearly caught up, just one load to fold.
  3. The blog is semi caught-up.
  4. I think I have enough shots to complete my rather large assignment – due in 2 weeks. Makes me extra happy.

Thank you for checking in. I trust you are well and having a wonderful week.

Kick Up a Heal or A Tail Feather – And Ring In Spring Break

Good Monday to you! I thought I would have a chance to scoot over and post the new do over the weekend. Turns out, I spent every last drop of time with the hubs.

We enjoyed a couple of dates and had the best QT a given weekend can bring.

Here’s a shot of the new do. My neck is enjoying the cool So Cal breeze.

I’m kickin’ up my heels for Monday!

And caught this guy kickin’ up his heels this morning too.

And passing out high-five’s as well.

The bird, just outside my window had his tail feather up for the day as well.

It’s a day of kicking up heels and tail feathers or what ever there is to kick up, as I’m officially on Spring Break!

I have some fun things planned and looking forward to diving further into photography.

Happy Monday!

A New Lens

I love weekends!

I love time with the hubs!

And I love the unexpected nugget the hubs picked up for me while we were out on our lunch date and errands.

The Micro Nikkor 105mm 2.8 lens is the lens I’ve been drooling over since my lady friend allowed me to give hers a whirl last week. And the hubs made that lens come to life for me today.

For the longest time the hubs has been asking “what lens do you want next”? And I continued to say, “I don’t know”? I knew the prime 105 was right up at the top of my list but I also have another lens close to the top as well. So it was hard to know which one I wanted without having a one on one feel with each lens. So last week after my little twirl with my friends lens, I knew. I knew without a doubt the next lens I wanted to add to my stash.

Here’s one of the first of 70 + shots I took on my first spin with the girl.

Now the journey with this lens has just begun, as I’m looking forward to throwing it in drive tomorrow, and the day after that and…

Happy Valentine’s Day

So this morning, the first thing the hubs said to me – “Happy Valentine’s Day”. I feel blessed to have and to hold My Love who loves me every day, as if it were Valentines. And I’m thankful the I Love You’s are heard morning, noon and night each day throughout the year.

In honor of today being Valentines, I switched up my day and did something I haven’t done in years. I dug out my colored pencils and the rest is history.

What can I say?

The last few days have been busy.

  • I finished up my photography assignment this week.
  • Discovered the very next lens I want to add to my collection. It’s the 105 mm f2.8
  • I picked up my colored pencils today for the first time in years

I was inspired by one of my fruit shots a few weeks ago.

I took some shots of a mixture of fruit on a cake plate for my Mundane to Masterpiece photography assignment.

But today, I had the urge to begin a sketch.

I felt the need for some me time. And since I’m all caught up on my school assignment and the reading, I thought it would be fun to do a little drawing this week. And since Monday is a  school holiday, why not jump into the pencils for a few days, right?

So there you have what I’ve been up to all afternoon. I really enjoyed my day.

But the thing I’m looking forward to the most is getting the hubs all to myself for the next three days.

Perhaps I’m a little on the giddy side because we are back to just the two of us under one roof as our nephew left this morning.

I haven’t mentioned much of our nephew (the hubs sisters son) staying with us while he looked for a job, but he’s been with us since October.

And as much as we love our nephew, it’s nice to have the nest back to just the two of us.

And with that, I’m off to begin the evening celebration which will more than likely involve the two of us staying home – Throwing another log on the fire – Catching up on a show or two (we missed Survivor last evening as I was out like a light before 9pm) – and enjoying each others company.

My Choice

There are times when it’s difficult picking my favorites.

While I need 40 shots to turn in for this (Masterpiece from the Mundane) assignment, I had to narrow it down to two pictures for Museum style mounting for critique in class.

After shooting 1,000’s of pictures (literally) over the last two + weeks, I finally made my decision on the two pictures that spoke the most to me.

This shot is all about color and the shallow depth of field. Something about it draws me in.

Mundane 001

Remember all those shots of the splash I posted way back when? Well I finally made my decision with this shot as “The One”. There are many things I like about this shot.

  • The cloudy/rainy day went hand in hand with the splash
  • The position of the glass in front of that colorful rock
  • The color, oh the rustic orange, aqua blue, greens and browns = YES
  • The position of the lime as it falls
  • The splash above and the splash below
  • The activity all the way around in this shot draws me in
  • And there is something about the shallow depth of field (blurred out background) that really does it for me

LimeDrop

Now to get these guys printed and given Museum style mounting for critique in class. Then I’ll be all set for my presentation.

The professor actually extended our due date as we now have another week to work on our assignments. I’m calling my work done and ready to move on to the next exciting assignment.

Have you any idea how much I love my Digital Darkroom class? Coming home at the end of each class with gained knowledge is quite a thrill. My love for photography is running wild about now!

Bits of news around here:

  • Spent all morning working on my assignment
  • Enjoyed a lunch date with the hubs
  • Planned to have one on one with the iron and ironing board
  • Worked on my assignment/computer all afternoon
  • Thinking about breaking out the iron and ironing board about now
  • Oh, I had my first round of Girl Scout Cookies last night – Gotta love the Thin Mints
  • The husband is to blame for the Cookies
  • I’m to blame for laying a hand on them

Now before it gets too late, I’m going to march right in there and do something about my ironing.

Until next time…

A Masterpiece from the Mundane

The last few weeks, I’ve worked pretty hard on my (Masterpiece from the Mundane) assignment. The Masterpiece from the mundane was to simply take shots (of anything) around our home (inside or outside) to create a masterpiece. I need 40 shots total to complete the assignment.

Here are a few of the shots I took this weekend to finish up the assignment.

I thought it would be fun to gather thread from my stash for one of the shots.

Mundane 015

And my colored pencils came to mind too.

Mundane 005

I really had a lot of fun working with these guys.

But this was the most exciting thing that came from all the playing. To keep the pencils from rolling all over the place, I took a piece of tape to hold them together.

And as I was moving them around, they sort of did something like this (below) on accident. So I tweaked them by spreading them out and I really like what happened.

Mundane 008

As far as our weekend goes, it’s been just great!

Friday, the hubs and I made a nice little trip up to LA to visit our daughter and her boyfriend who flew in for a few days. We enjoyed dinner over the ocean, as the restaurant was on a pier/stilts and the waves crashed below us.

And I have absolutely no pictures to share. I know, shocker. I was afraid of getting too camera happy with the daughter and her boyfriend. Little did I know the daughter told her boyfriend to be “ready” for pictures. Makes me sad I left the camera behind. Next time,  I won’t fret about my camera being in the way. Look out, I’m going to make up for lost time the next time around.

But the beauty of the afternoon/evening is this – we had such a great time together. And I told our daughter that I really, REALLY like her boyfriend.

The last couple of days has been quite relaxing just hanging out with the hubs. Tonight we have a fire crackling in the fireplace and I think we’re getting ready to play our usual evening round of backgammon. And I think I’m getting ready for a cup of coffee.

Cheers to a wonderful weekend and for being all set for class tomorrow.
