A Trip Of Work And Play

Hubby and I took a trip to St Louis a couple weekends ago to visit family.  We had such a great time and even had time to squeeze in a Cardinals game!

Ryan, Lauren, Hubby and I enjoy the game.

Our handsome Ryan. He’s such a genuine young man with a great big heart.

Our Beautiful Lauren. She has grown up to be such a beautiful young lady inside out.

Root, root root for the home team. What a great game! Especially in the 9th inning when the Cardinals rally from their deficit to beat Dodgers, 5-4!

We polished off the weekend with family, then last Monday we hit the road for Indy for hubby’s business meetings.

I truly enjoyed staying in the heart of the city as I was able to scoot (walk) around town (while hubby worked) without having to deal with parking.  As a matter of fact we walked to dinner every night and hubby was the only one in a car (to and from work) while we were there.

Just 2 blocks from our hotel was the Indiana Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument. It is a 284 ft 6 in structure with incredible statues surrounding all 4 sides.

Just one block from the hotel was this interesting Artsgarden that stands 17′ over an intersection in Indy. Such an innovative use of space.

Quite creative use of “vinal 45 records” This piece had so much dimension and creative serendipity. I couldn’t seem to get enough of this piece of art.

I used the picture on the right to show the many layers. Still hard to grasp the real deal here.

 Cool table tops

More art. I found the sculpture (top right) to be whimsical, the medium is metal.

My Cup Runneth Over, bottom right ~ had colorful jewels attached all over the background. Pretty neat.  If you click on the pic to make it larger, you too can see if you look close.

And I just liked the colorful painting on the left.

This was my hubby one evening after dinner.

Weber Grill was amazing! I had no idea this restaurant existed, now I know how good it is.

We left Indy last Thursday evening and pointed our nose in the direction of Champagne, IL (aka hubby’s old stomping grounds from his college days). And his very favorite pizza joint to date! The Chicago stuffed pizza was so delicious!  After our fill of pizza we made our way back to St Louis.

The sunset along the way

The Cross Foundation has completed a 198 foot Cross at the intersection of Interstates 57 & 70 in Effingham, Illinois. Each time we pass by we marvel at this cross and size.

I Had a very unique experience on our way back to the hotel one evening. I captured a pic of lightning in the background of the arch. We passed through St Louis during a storm and I didn’t realize I captured lightning ’til I downloaded the pics.

We had a great time with family last weekend but I got so lazy taking pics.  I’ll just keep those wonderful memories and treasure those good times.

~ The grass is greener at home ~ It’s so good to be home in every way. Pics taken in the backyard the other day.  There truly is no place quite like home.

Stay-cation Blessings

As we round the bend of our little stay I’m filled with emotion, to the point I can’t keep it all in. As hubby held me tight this morning, tears pooled as I could no longer hold it in. When he asked what was wrong, I assured him that all was well and explained that it was sweet emotion.

The day started with the prettiest little setting here at our house.

A partial view of what we tasted as we woke – love it that we have this view without even getting out of bed.

The beauty surrounding us is indescribable. Even my hubby (who does not appreciate the cold weather) admitted how pretty it was. But he also states that “it’s a sign that it’s time to go”.

The street in front of our home

Secretly I had the wish of seeing one last snowfall before we moved away. Perhaps it’s the sentimental side of me, I really don’t know. But that dream came true yesterday as it snowed all day and into the night. But the greatest blessing came this morning as it stuck through the night.

I’m still in awe that it came right smack dab in the middle of our autumn blessings. I feel double blessed.

My mission was to enjoy the moment and take in as much as possible.

Hubby’s car was picked up and his little car is already on the road for California.

Can’t get enough of my guy

Loved the pose they struck as they finished up.

Hubby’s final day of work was yesterday and he had to take a break from his “Stay-cation” work here at home to go in and return his work related items. It was a good day and he’s grateful for the last 10 years with the company.

We celebrated last night at the Japanese restaurant

Later in the evening hubby pulled out this sack

Earlier in the day he stopped by the candy store and picked up my favorite fudge ever.

I’m so grateful for my husband and the blessings that surround us. I’m thankful for the beautiful snow that I so wished to see once again. My cup is full and I feel ready to embark on our next great adventure.

May the blessings that surround you bring joy your way.

Our Stay-cation Winding Down

Taken from the end of our driveway

The last two days feel more like “work-cation” than anything else. Scrambling would be more like it. Scrambling to get the house just so and running last minute errands to ensure a smooth take off. I’ll spare you and me the details but all in all we’re right on schedule.

The trees are still alive with color

From the balcony yesterday afternoon

From the balcony at 6:30 this evening. Love the dark stormy clouds rolling in.

Now hubby and I have plans to sit a spell, relax and catch up on some of our recorded shows that we haven’t gotten to yet. I look forward to an evening with our feet propped up but first I’m going to put a pot of coffee on. It just sounds good on this cool stormy night.

May your autumn days be beautiful and your autumn nights be restful.

Stay-cation Day 2

We had a nice relaxing morning. We lounged around, visited with each other, I had a wonderful long visit with my mom via southern bell and pretty much didn’t exert ourselves too much.

The afternoon came and we both kicked it in drive. We cleaned our cars together, worked in the garage, went shopping and made a nice dent on the to-do list.

My autumn stay-cation wouldn’t be complete without a couple pictures taken from around the house.

The pretty gold leaves mesh well with our beautiful blue afternoon sky

Pretty autumn flowers brought over by our neighbor

A pot of bean soup is delightful on a crisp autumn day.

It’s nice spending the last few days here together. We’re able to mix work and play seamlessly and I feel so blessed that we have each other to share these precious moments.

Stay-cation Day 1

It all started for me at 7:30 when I could not go back to sleep. I thought how nice it would be to just lay there a while but I couldn’t take the excitement a moment longer. That’s when I hopped out of bed. As soon as hubby heard me rustling he said with a chuckle in his voice “just where do you think you’re going”. That’s all it took for me to snuggle in and the next thing I knew I was waking totally rested at 9:30. That was a great way to start the day.

Around 11:30 hubby and I left to meet some guys from his group for lunch. I was disappointed that I didn’t get my camera out earlier but at least I got a pic of the guys paying for lunch.

It was such a joy for me to get to know the group and even better that one of the guys will be joining us in California! “Q” that’s what we call him, he’s the guy on the right and he’s been working with hubby since we arrived in NY. Hubby is delighted that he gets to have this bright young man working with the team out there.

After lunch we stopped by one of our favorite stores “Lowe’s” to pick up an item.

However this little nativity stopped me right in my tracks. If we were going to be here for Christmas, I think I would have considered picking it up. I love the colors and it looks like pottery and well, I love it and it moved me…

Back home we had a little visit with our realtor who stopped by. We had a great meeting and we should be listing the house soon!

The view out back taken from inside around 4:00 this afternoon

And a view to the side. We had ambitious plans to chop down all the little saplings so that we can see the water on that side. But that’s a job we’re letting the new homeowners tend to.

Started the coffee pot at 5 pm to enjoy sipping through the beautiful evening hours.

We have big plans for a nice restful evening here in our home. And I’m totally loving the idea that I’m calling this last week our autumn vacation. It’s too beautiful to think of it any other way.

An Autumn Vacation

I’m calling this last week our beautiful autumn vacation in our new home. It truly is a splendid thing. Hubby is taking vacation time and we are enjoying our last days in this pretty setting.

Taken from the balcony ~ Love sitting in my lawn chair sipping my morning cup of coffee on the balcony. It’s calming to watch the little ducks swim and listen for that next fish to flop and spy the deer and chipmunks at play or watch my neighbor’s fish.

Looking through the reds and golds in the front yard

Hubby and I had some errands this week and thought I’d take some pics along the way.

Some trees are just starting to turn color

While others are bursting with beautiful reds and gold’s

I was pretty excited to score this hand made glass ring for $5.99 at a cute little shop along the way.

A barn scene

And a beautiful building on a street corner

I tend to think we’re having the best stay cay ever. Autumn brings such beautiful changing color, it’s a season of change and seems fitting that this is our time for change too.

I have never been to California as I don’t count my layovers in LA an actual trip there. I’ve never seen the lay of the land, haven’t a clue of what to expect. Sure hubby tries to describe it but it’s truly hard to fathom unless you’ve experienced it. But the one thing I do know is this…Hubby declares I’m going to be in love and that’s all I need to know. He knows me well and he is so anxious to get me there and introduce me to the place for the first time. Excitement wells each passing day but for now, I’m on my pretend vacation enjoying my last few days here in the beautiful northern country.

From The Passenger Seat

I find taking pictures to be so much fun. There are times that I’m so in the mood to enjoy the moment (without the camera) and other times I can’t enjoy the moment unless I’m snapping a bazillion shots of whatever.

Our last road trip south (for Christmas) was one of those moments where I plain and simple couldn’t sit still without my camera. Hubby and I were enjoying wonderful conversation and the scenery was marvelous. So here’s how I viewed things from the passenger seat.

I wasn’t able to capture just how beautiful the Ice was but here’s a sample of what I was able to get while clipping down the highway at rapid speeds. This was taken out my side window.

Another little sample

A little further south

The pretty blue sky was filled with lots of travelers too and the contrails deserve a little attention too.

By this time we were out of the snow, it was late afternoon off the major highway enjoying the pretty country side. I’m glad the trees didn’t stop me from taking this picture because I think they add great character.

My special chauffeur

So get this… I was so involved in taking pictures that I didn’t capture what I thought I was taking in my side mirror. It must have had to do with where the light was coming from because it took a reflection of me instead of what I was expecting to take out my side mirror.

While driving the old country roads I spied this bright red tractor. I had to be quick with the camera or I would have missed the moment. I’m quite smitten with this setting from the hay in the foreground to that little winding path up the hill.

And last but not least is this car. This was the most interesting car we followed in a quaint little town that evening. Now that we have this picture, we won’t forget it.

And this wraps up just a few of my favorite pictures along life’s way.

So… How Was The Aquarium?

Hubby brought me with him to Boston yesterday (he says I’m like his American Express – He can’t leave home without me), he’s on a business trip and I’m playing. And I know what he’s going to ask when he gets back to our room this evening. He’s going to ask me how the Aquarium was. And to be honest, I’m sure it’s wonderful but I didn’t go.

I’ve wanted to go to the Aquarium here in Boston for so long and this was my plan for the day. I was up before hubby and all ready to go down and have breakfast with him before he left for work.

A little breakfast by the fire

After breakfast I came back to the room to gather the info needed for the Aquarium. I quickly learned they didn’t have any parking available so I found the nearest parking garage and after calling the place I found it was going to be 34 bucks (no matter if I was there from 4 hrs to 8 hrs) + 20 bucks for the Aquarium! (GASP!) There were cheaper parking garages true but I was in no mood to deal with the cold, buses and who knows what. And with that I changed my tune quick about going to the Aquarium. Perhaps another time.

Then I thought – Boston surely has some nice big malls and shopping centers, that’s what I’ll do. So I called down to the front desk and the gal told me exactly where I needed to go to fill that need. And with that I programmed the GPS and away we went.

When I arrived I couldn’t help but notice the magnitude of the mall and thought, where am I going to park. Then I saw a grand mall entrance right smack dab in the middle of The Cheesecake Factory and PF Changs and I knew that was the place for me and I would not get lost finding my car.

From my parking spot

I entered the mall and noticed these huge ornaments hung from the ceiling. They were such a pretty sight throughout the mall.

A couple more

A pretty storefront

While in Macy’s this centerpiece caught my eye.

On the other side of the centerpiece was this oblong bowl with these festive serving utensils. I just don’t know how user-friendly they would be.

I love this Lenox Holiday set

Then on over to Williams Sonoma where this large stockpot begged for my undivided attention. WOW I LOVE this pot but it will have to stay right there because…

Say no more!

Pottery Barn is another one of my favorite places to shop. What a pretty tree with the large “silver bell” garland.

Garland up close.

Talbots festive window

But the best thing about the day was that I found a bargain on perfume! I really needed it but have been putting it off lately. So today there was a bargain, buy one and get one of equal or lesser value for $9.99! I fell hook line and sinker for this deal and purchased two huge bottles with this great offer!

Escada – Pacific Paradise and LACOSTE – dream of pink

So there Mister Parking Snob – I feel much better now!

My Trip To FL And A Giveaway

Oh my word, I can’t believe I didn’t even post “something” in here while I was in FL this past week! There were days while I was there that I never even once turned on my computer so I’m blaming that on the decline of posts. My trip was fantastic and I enjoyed spending time with my parents and my brother and his family. My nephew wanted a drawing lesson with me and I can’t begin to express the fun we had. By the end of the day his drawing improved from looking cartoonish to “the real deal”. Way to go buddy!

Mom and I shopped, strolled by the lake and sat on the bench by the bank of the lake visiting, went to lunch together and numerous mother daughter stuff. Mom has been like a sister/best friend/and mom all wrapped into one ever since I can remember. Well the “sister part” within the last “15” years or so but my best friend and mom always! I should state for the record that Bobby is my “Very Best – Best Friend”!

I had fun with dad too as I helped him with some projects around the house and it’s always a pleasure working and visiting with him. He’s a character though let me tell ya and he can keep me on my toes. And with him, jokes and laughter are almost constant.

We had several dinners out and mom of course cooked my favorite things when we were home.

I arrived back home with hubby late Saturday evening and I’ve been totally soaking in the time with my dearest. At one point Saturday, hubby called me on my layover stating that he couldn’t wait to wrap his paws around me. And I checked my watch counting down the minutes to be caught up in his arms. He had the apartment completely clean, bed made, his laundry finished and grocery shopping complete before I got home. And when I walked through the door, the place looked so warm and welcoming. It’s truly good to be back home with the man of my dreams…

I’m so far behind with all of you and look forward to catching up now that I’m back, I’ll be seeing you around.

Now for some “FUN” – My friend Tanya is hosting a giveaway and you are all free to to join! Just click on Tanya’s name (above) to enter and perhaps “WIN” this amazing cookbook!

The Streets of Downtown Boston

It’s a beautiful crisp autumn day in the heart of Boston. I was up before Bobby this morning showered and dressed to hit the road as soon as he left for work. He carpooled with one of the other guys whose here in town and I had the car for the day.

I started the day bright and early with Nellie, one of our best road trip friends. Yeah, that’s what we call our Nuvi Garmin. Normally I would be nervous to endeavor such a drive to the city alone but not today as Nellie had my back. She’s been our pal for nearly 2 years now and I can’t imagine driving without her.

Deeper

And Deeper into the city we go just me and my little pal Nellie.

We found a nice parking spot and I programmed Nellie so that she could take me right back to that spot should I get lost.

The first little jewels I saw were these beautiful babies all nestled into this Baby Limo as I call it. That little carriage seats 6 babies and on the side reads bye bye buggy. I have never seen such a carriage in all my life and I had to capture the moment. I just can’t understand why that little guy in the front seat didn’t have any socks or anything on his little feet. It was in the low 40’s this morning and reaching a high of 65 for the day.

I passed by so many beautiful buildings and this church really caught my eye

But the doors of the church are what truly caught my eye first

$1.00 for a sack of red peppers. I’m kicking myself for not swooping in on that deal.

No doubt this is Chinatown

Pretty little nuggets

Thought they were just too cute watching the birds

It was a feeding frenzy in the heart of town where bread and rolls were freely given.

This telephone booth with the pagoda on top caught my eye.

Nellie and I stopped for lunch and I had tilapia on a bed of rice with some nice steamed veggies on the side. It was oh so yummy!

I walked and walked, shopped and took in the city one step and block at a time and by the time I was ready to go I was completely lost. There is absolutely no way I would have been able to find my car. Even though we’ve had Nellie for about 2 years, I panicked thinking what if Nellie steers me wrong and I can’t find my car. But as always, she knows right where she is at all times and she directed me right back to my car without any trouble. And little Nellie and I will continue to live happily ever after.

Now I’m ready for a little afternoon nap and then I’ll be ready to go out with Bobby when he gets in from work.

Road Trip Part 5 – The End

I don’t enjoy getting behind but that’s where things stand here in bloggeritaville ’til now. I made the decision to finish up our vacation without blogging and what a difference it made taking the pressure off. Now the pressure is back to get caught up, so here we go.

We spent some time with Bobby’s children and started out with Kristy. Kristy is a senior in college, is that possible? I still can’t believe that. We are proud of her as she’s pulling straight A’s in all her classes. We had such a wonderful time taking her shopping and enjoyed a delightful dinner at PF Chang’s (her choice) which we didn’t argue with, yum. We’re looking forward to spending time with her again for her graduation in May.

Bobby and Kristy

We spent a couple evenings with Ryan when he was off work. He’s the head baker of one of the Panera Bread Companies in St Louis. He is an amazing baker and whips up some of my absolute favorite pastries. He always spoils me when he visits as he takes full control of my kitchen and he makes the most amazing dishes for us. Below is a picture of Ryan and his longtime girlfriend (Danni) of I believe 3 or 4 years now and their friend Carlie. Can you tell he just woke up in this picture?

Lauren’s a sophomore in college this year and we’re so proud of her too. She’s our other daughter making straight A’s. Her classes were already underway so she drove over to spend Saturday evening with us. She chose a great Japanese restaurant that evening and we enjoyed a wonderful conversation with Lauren and her boyfriend Andy. Andy is such a sweetheart who is down to earth and loves to talk about philosophy. He’s definitely a keeper.

We spent Sunday afternoon at Bobby’s brothers (Jim, Chris and family’s) home. Chris prepared such an amazing feast and had the most amazing steaks I’ve ever had on the BBQ. Chris is like a sister to me and we never have a hard time picking up where we left off. Bobby helped his brother Jim and boys fix the go cart and they had it up and running in no time. Basketball was played and lots of visiting outside in the cool of the evening. I wanted to take pictures of everything that day but decided to just enjoy the special moments without interrupting for pictures; therefore I don’t have pictures to show of our day. But I can say that I have it all stored in my mind and I’ll never forget what a great time we all had.

Bobby and I had quite a bit of alone time sandwiched between the family gatherings and whatnot and we were also able to have some nice dinner dates just the two us. He took me back to his (now our) all time favorite Mexican restaurant from when he was just a kid (since 1998 for me). OK get this – we drove 2 hours out of our way on our way back to NY to visit Urbana-Champagne, IL for the most amazing pizza ever . It was that good my friends and well worth the drive and a second helping!

We had a great trip home and I can’t tell weather I’m glad to be back or if I want our vacation to last a bit longer. I think what I would really like is for Bobby to retire – but that’s another 20 years from now. I tried to get him to stay home with me today but he had meetings to attend. He did say he would see if he can take Friday off. I’m not ready for him to go back to work as I want him all to myself. I’m selfish that way so I’ll spend the next 20 years gettin’ over it.

Road Trip Part 4 – Take Me Out To The Ballgame

We’re in the St Louis area visiting Bobby’s family. However we are taking time for just us as we love our alone time too.

We were able to take in a St Louis Cardinal game this week. The Cardinals have been Bobby’s team ever since he was a very small child. He still remembers his sister (Rita, she’s 11 years older than Bobby) taking him to his very first St Louis Cardinal game for his 5th birthday. And he’s been an enthusiastic fan ever since.

We enjoyed the diamond box seats that were just 11 rows up from third base.

It was such a fun night and the weather was perfect with a little cool streak at the end. We had brats, peanuts and crackerjacks as we can’t go to a game without those things. But our team didn’t score nary a point – yup, it was 12 Milwaukee Brewers to zip for the Cards. We didn’t let the score board dampen our spirits as we had a total blast cheering at the ole ball game.

Road Trip Part 3 – Worlds Greatest Pizza Discovered

For the past 11 years I’ve heard Bobby rant and rave about Chicago style stuffed pizza. It’s been 15 years since he’s had that yummy explosion of goodness in his mouth and the craving for that has never gone away. So on our drive through Urbana-Champaign, IL; he took me to one of his all time favorite pizza joints called Papa Del’s. Oh my word was it ever worth the 45 min. wait.

This is what our pizza looked like before we laid into it

A peak on the inside

It was not your regular deep dish pizza with a thick crust. The crust was the regular thickness, but shaped into a very deep pan much like how a pie crust goes into a pie pan. They place the toppings on the very bottom – for us it was mushrooms, onions and peppers. Then the nice thick layer of cheese, the pepperoni is added on top of the cheese and the sauce covers the top. Then the pizza is sprinkled with special seasonings and then one lone pepperoni was placed in the very center as the little topper.

I can officially report that I have now eaten the world’s greatest pizza. And it’s all Bobby’s fault that I crave that pizza! Hmmmm, if we could only work that 3 hour drive into our trip for another round as it doesn’t get any better than that.

Road Trip Part 2 – Visit To Bobby’s Alma Mater

Founded in 1867

Bobby has always told me that one day he would take me there. We left Kristy back in Michigan to start school and drove down the road to Urbana-Champaign, IL to Bobby’s Alma Mater yesterday. Bobby gave me a tour and I felt in awe as he took my hand and led me through what used to be the place he studied. We strolled the walkways, sat underneath a huge shade tree and watched thousands and thousands of students on a high as they prepared for another school year.

I can’t begin to explain the height of joy and wonder I felt so I’m just going to share a few statistics and what pictures I do have.

Here are a few stats of the campus –

  • 559 Total buildings on 7.7 square miles (4,938 acres)
  • 28,000 undergraduate students this year
  • 9,000 graduate and professional students this year
  • 4,000 courses and more than 150 fields of study
  • 2008 – US News and World Report rated it the # 8 public university.
  • College of engineering is ranked 5th

Alma Mater

The Alma Mater has represented their motto of Learning and Labor since its unveiling in 1929. The figures clasping hands in the background represent learning and labor, and the Alma Mater in the foreground opens her arms and welcomes students with the inscription ‘To thy happy children of the future those of the past send greetings.’

Illini Union

The Illini Union was constructed 1939 – It has many purposes as it includes a 90 room guest hotel (Bobby says we’re going to have to stay there one day), food court, bowling alley, arcade room, pool hall, computer lab, and numerous study lounges. It is a place where students meet and relax, and it brought back so many fond memories for Bobby. He took me on a grand tour of that building, the inside halls were grand and I stood in awe of the massive columns stretching to the high ceiling. Each room was a showcase all of its own and I felt like I was standing on hallowed ground. I was filled to overflowing with amazement, perhaps that’s why I didn’t interrupt the moment to take pictures inside.

Road Trip Part 1

We started our little road trip yesterday morning. We drove about 4 hours up the road and stopped on the American side of the Niagara Falls. We wished we had gone to the Canadian side as we were driving through Canada to go up over to Michigan anyway. But the US side is where we landed and we enjoyed the beautiful sights.

The flowers and gardens were so pretty

The sunset

And another shot of the sunset last evening.

We made our way to Ruby Tuesdays where Bobby’s daughter Kristy works. She was working last night but that didn’t put a damper on us spending time with her. We requested to be seated in her area so that we could at least visit with her during our meal. She must have told the whole staff that her parents were there as the staff kept showing up to our table as they all wanted to meet Kristy’s parents. We had such a fun relaxing time and we felt extra special as we were really catered to.

Then when we got to our room… Unbeknownst to me this is what awaited us right in the corner of our room! I love it when Bobby surprises me.

I planned to blog last evening but this thing had my attention and with that, Bobby started the water and we both enjoyed relaxing in that thing for the remains of the evening.

We have had a very busy day with Kristy and that post is for another day as we’re getting ready to start up the hot tub again this evening…
