My Parents Visit San Diego Day 1

My parents flew into town last Thursday for a nice little visit with us out here in San Diego.

On Friday, June 10th we drove into downtown San Diego and crossed the Coronado Bridge for a little tour of Coronado island.

We snapped a few pix – below is the famous Hotel Del.

Next stop – USS Midway Museum, one of America’s longest-serving aircraft carriers.

Mom and dad on deck.

Hubby and I were shot in the Midway Brig AKA the prison for sailors who got out of hand while on the ship.

The pretty view from the deck with the Coronado Bridge in the background and the famous kiss statue in the foreground.

There was something special about being on the deck where many served our country.

Hubby and Pop on deck.

The “famous kiss” statue.

After our tour downtown, we moved along to oceanfront dinner reservations.  We arrived a bit early so we enjoyed a little stroll out back.

My folks, the two that helped shape me into who I am today.  I’m so blessed.

The evening hours were centered around visiting, coffee and shooting pool.  I can’t think of a better way to spend time with family than this.

Blessings – Debbie

I Heard Her Laugh and I Cried

As my feet hit the floor this morning, I knew what I had first and foremost on the agenda for the day. And that consisted of Banana Bread, period, end of conversation. Nothing was going to come between me and the taste of banana bread and coffee.

I wasn’t thinking about the bread pan I would be using. But, the bread pan turned out to be what has weighted heavy in my thoughts ever since I reached for it.

I haven’t used this particular pan yet, but it’s used. It came from my mother-in-law. But it was new to me as I inherited it from her before our move to NY. I still remember her checking to see what I got. She’d ask “did you get that cookbook or what about that.” She’d ask. She wanted to make sure her things were going to be cared for before her passing.

This pan moved from Texas to storage in NY while our home was being built. And I had pretty much forgotten about so many special little things that were in safe keeping.

So today, there in my kitchen, it was just ma and me. She was heavy on my mind from the time I reached for that pan and she was right there with me in my thoughts while I played house in my kitchen.

So as I looked at these burn marks on the bottom of the pan, a story she told came to mind.

She told the story of long ago when she baked bread. The bread she baked was so over baked to the point it was like a rock. And she told of how her sweet hubby tossed it outside and how it was carried off by the dog. Oh how she used to chuckle telling that story. I never did get to meet pa but I got glimpses of him through the stories that were told. And today, I heard her laugh again and I cried.

It made me wonder if this was not the bread pan she used. Was it? I wish I could ask her. This pan has untold stories all over the outside showing lots of wear. But I wouldn’t trade it for a brand spankin’ new pan for anything. It really grew on me today.

See ma?  The sides are all buttered up and another batch of bread is ready for the oven.

Fresh from the oven again.  Makes me wonder what you baked in here last ma.

My banana bread turned out so Mmmm, mmmmm good. Thank you ma for the pan! I prolly used too much butter on that warm slice but it added to the yumminess of the bread.

I’m left with some pretty amazing things from ma. But the memories are what make these precious things so valuable to me. I’m so blessed.

Kristy Graduates College

Hubby and I spent a couple days with his daughter Kristy. She has grown into such a beautiful intelligent woman and graduated college this past weekend.

We crammed so many wonderful experiences in with her in the time we had. There were lunches and special dinners together, ice cream treats at Cold Stone, a fun time in the arcade and visits in her home.

Hubby and Kristy racing in the arcade

Kristy at the wheel

On the evening before her graduation we dined at PF Changs, one of her favorite restaurants. And as always the fortune cookies top off the meal. Not so much the cookie part but the fortune part. We all marveled at her little fortune so much that I wanted a picture.

Graduation day came and she was quite sad. She continued to say she just wanted to stay in college forever. And when the tears would pool in her eyes my heart broke.

Snapped a quick shot of her before we left for her graduation ceremony.

Hubby dropped Kristy and me off and while he was parking she quickly bumped into one of her friends.

Then another

And a couple more

Then the pool of tears began – here she had just wiped her tears and displayed this cute little pouty face.

Hubby arrived shortly and we quickly went in to secure our front row seat.

We were so happy we spied her in the sea of graduates

I spied this guy and his cap says it all.

And this guy I could only imagine how he was looking for his family before the ceremony commenced.

What a beautiful graduation ceremony with an amazing inspiring speaker, I’ll never forget it.

As the ceremony went on into the recognition of each graduate, I had fun on the front row watching shoes. There were girls in high heals and guys in their finest but here are a pair of shoes that really caught my attention let me tell ya.

Soon the ceremony was over and the last name was called. Before the last of the graduates even had a chance to make it to their seats…the graduating class broke out with the wave. Once, twice, three times and then the last wave (the fourth one) came in slow motion. The whole room was filled with cheers and so much emotion. WOW what an ending for their new beginning!

After the ceremony we took Kristy out to her favorite restaurant and then back to her place for cake. We visited with her a couple hours and when it came time for us to leave her little eyes pooled with a fresh wave of tears. It just broke my heart and hubby and I let her know it’s all going to be all right.

Kristy majored in advertising and she has a couple interviews lined out. She will continue working but she’s thinking of going back to school for her MBA next year. We are so proud of her and we wish her the very best.

A Visit With Grandma

We enjoyed a little visit with my grandma for dinner last evening. We were on our way up to hubby’s daughters college graduation and grandma was right on the way. So we stopped and treated her to dinner and a few hour visit.

She’s beautiful as ever and she didn’t know I stole this one of her looking out over the river.

I snuck this pic of her visiting with hubby and got in DEEP trouble for it. I’ll say it was worth the trouble because I love this candid shot of her, just wish that glass were out of the way.

The view from where we were sitting – It was a little too chilly for the patio last night.

A shot of the entry as we were leaving.

Back to grandma’s we went for a little visit and she prepared some nice homemade brownies and milk for our dessert. She told us stories about her and grandpa, I’ll have to share those sometime. She says what keeps her going strong and healthy is the fact that to this day she is not on any sort of medication.

Hubby set up the tripod so that we could get a little group shot to remember our evening.

And I captured a few shots of grandma and grandpa. Such a beautiful couple and I’ve enjoyed this picture of them since my childhood. Sorry about the glare and as hubby says we’ll have to take our scanner next time we go to visit grandma.

Here’s another pic of the cute couple. Grandpa was about 18 and Grandma said she was 16.

At nightfall it was time for us to say goodbye and wrap up the last two hour drive. We crossed over the river and received such a colorful display as the sun was setting. We’re so happy for such a full and blessed day.

Christmas Memories

Christmas at my big brothers was a wonderful event this year.My parents from down south drove north and my hubby and I drove south to meet half way at my brother’s home.My parents, hubby and I arrived early evening the night of December 23rd to a wonderful meal around the table. My little brother and family flew north to spend this Christmas with my sis-in-law’s family and we missed them this year.

Christmas Eve dawned and Hubby and I slept in ‘til our hearts were content.By the time we were all up and at ‘em (we stayed at a very near by hotel) and arrived the rest of the family had already had breakfast. We already knew that would be the case so I fixed a nice little breakfast for me and my dearest. Hubby enjoying bacon, eggs, hash browns and homemade rolls (my sis-in-law made the rolls and the strawberry jam) with a glass of orange juice.

After we finished our breakfast I was giving Hubby some attention and my dad conveniently grabbed my camera to snap our picture. I have no idea what hubby’s doing here but I love his expression anyways.

Then Hubby wanted to take a pic of me and asked me to smile.

Christmas Eve Horderves is one of our family traditions as mom started this when my brothers and I were very small kids and we still carry on with this tradition.

We’re waiting to dive into the horderves.

After the hordervers our family tradition is to open ALL the gifts. Santa was good to us all this year but the fun part was watching the boys open their gifts with so much excitement.

My Brother and his wife – our amazing host and hostess!

After all the hoopla and gift opening we ventured out to my brother’s out building that he’s made into a great game area for the boys. Our nephews surprised as they walked in…

By this new “Bank Shot” Santa delivered. They were not even suspecting this as they had already received some amazing gifts already.

The boys having so much fun with their new toy!

Pops and my big bro enjoy some “hoops” as well.Actually we all played Bank Shot but I’ll spare all the pictures and move along…

A little later the “Boys” start a rousing game of poker…

Our nephew

While the boys play poker, the “girls” play the Wii Fit! Mom still holds the record on the ski jump – jumping a total of 369 meters – GO MOM!  Here she is on the slopes and there’s no stopping her!

After all the excitement on Christmas Eve, we wrapped up our games sometime after midnight and made our way back to the hotel for some much needed sleep. We did have to set the alarm for Christmas morning as we had a big family breakfast with my sister-in-law and all of her family.

After spending the morning with her family we went back to my brothers to prepare Christmas dinner and there were more games to be played.

Christmas dinner – our amazing hostess taking the picture.

My brother and me playing rummy – at any given time you would find family playing some sort of games from Rook, Texas Holdem’, 5 Card Draw, 7 Card Stud, Rummy, Wii, Bank Shot and Race Cars…

Pops checking out mom’s Rook hand

The boys set up a cool race track that occupies two tables and Jeff Gordon and Jimmy Johnson cars were a big hit on the track! My hubby threatens to buy them Tony Stewart race cars but they’re NOT Stewart fans like us.

Pops and Hubby giving Jimmy Johnson and Jeff Gordon a spin – Now Hubby wants a race track.

Pops walking the tight rope with an audience – It cracked me up to see him put his rally cap on. It was obvious he meant business and he made it to the other side – Way to go POPS!

We thoroughly enjoyed the game room with something for everyone and some great memories were made.

Our last evening was spent watching old family movies (from 20 years ago) and looking at pictures. I have no idea what’s so funny that I’m sharing with them but I’ll never forget all the fun times we shared together.

Hubby and I said our goodbyes to the family Saturday evening…

and got up early Sunday to head back home.

Hubby is home with me this week and I’m enjoying our time together so much. Monday we were able to sleep in and chill all day and did not even as much as lift a finger all day. It was wonderful and we will continue to enjoy the rest of this week. We may take in a movie or something but it will definitely be low key all week.

Family Treasures

I’ve been working on more pictures of my mother and her siblings. Unfortunately I don’t have my dad’s pictures yet so it does seem pretty one sided lately. Unfortunately over the holidays, I didn’t bother scanning any more family pictures and that bums me out. But I have made a mental note that that is one of my priorities when we return to mom and dads the next time.

A Few Family Treasures

As a child I used to love looking through all the old family albums and I always wanted to know who was in the pictures. And now as an adult, I have not grown weary of family pictures.

While we were at my parents over Christmas, mom got out the ‘old’ slide projector and we reminisced once again. As a matter of fact, that old slide projector is as old as me if not older and my parents made it a family tradition way back when to view slides at Christmas time. Mom and dad’s honeymoon pictures in Niagara Falls are in the batch of slides and I’m thrilled with the old treasure chest of memories. I’m happy that’s still a family tradition and we all enjoyed that this year with both of my grandmother’s with us.

P.S. – Bobby is so happy the Giants won the Super Bowl! For the simple reason the Patriots didn’t take the Miami Dolphin winning streak title from 1972! So here’s a little shout out for the Giants!

The Beauty Of Innocence

The beauty of innocence doesn’t get prettier than this.

Mom and Her Baby Brother

I’ve been working on this picture of mom since August and finally I was able to put together a frame yesterday that spoke to me. I have many favorite pictures of mom but I think this could potentially be at the very top.

So, to start off the “LOVE” month I thought it would be a good day to begin with mom. She’s the one responsible for teaching me how to be a lady and showed me by example a woman of grace. She is polished elegance and holds kindness beneath her wings. She has a charm that words can’t express and her gentleness has no ending. She possesses tenderness sewn with compassion and quilted with that extra special softness that was always seen day in and day out. I count myself blessed to call her my wonderful loving mother.

Twins – My Wish Came True

So many memories come back when I think back on my twin nieces. There was a time when I wanted twins (way before I met my hubby) and I’ll never forget the day my brother and sister-in-law announced that they were having twins. I still remember thinking “I have my twins now” and the feeling of being content settled over me.

The girls were my little cutie pies wrapped in all their sweetness and I was so overjoyed to be their Aunt Deb. As they grew older, they would love to get their little hands on all my jewelry. They would take my rings and put them on their toes and do all silly sorts of stuff with jewelry. I still remember polishing their little finger nails and even giving them hair cuts.

On this particular day I made arrangements to have a nice little outing with just me and the girls for the day. And I’ll never forget all the fun times we had.

Back in the day, they were two of the cutest apples of my eyes and the only girl nieces we have on both sides of our families.

I’m not intentionally leaving my nephews out but my nephews in Dan’s family didn’t live in FL and my little nephew Ryan was just a little guy so the girls and I seemed to bond in those days.

This past Christmas I remember thinking oh how the time goes by. And those sweet little girls are now all grown up into very lovely young ladies and almost as tall as Aunt Deb.

I want to continue making special memories with our nieces and nephews and the times we have with family will be cherished forever.

Our Visit In The Mid West

I fell off the Blog wagon and it’s hard to get up, due to being so far behind. I thought I was going to have time to blog when we were back home but for some reason, blogging and vacationing don’t mix well with me. Now let’s see, where was I

We left St Louis on Monday November the 12th and went to Missouri to visit Hubby’s Sister and her Son and daughter-in-law and their two daughters. Little Connie was born just hours before we arrived at the hospital.

Baby Connie was born just hours before we arrived. What another precious little girl God has given our nephew his wife.

Proud parents of two very special little girls. Daddy is holding Samantha and Mommy with her precious new bundle of joy. Samantha just loves her new little sister and we were told that she cried when the nurses took her baby sister from the room.

Bobby’s Sister aka grandma. She’s so proud of her kids and she just adores her grandbabies so much.

Great Uncle and Aunt get in on this exciting day. I was honored to be handed the baby the moment we walked in the room, I must have bonded with her for an hour or so. How sweet it was to hold my Great Niece Connie. Sweet little Samantha was so shy and didn’t remember us although she did let us give her a little hug goodbye when it was time for us to leave.

What a wonderful visit we had with family and we look forward to seeing all of them again sometime.

Visit With Family

I’ve been working on a few pictures from our trip so here goes the first couple days.

Our first night we met up at Ryan and Lauren’s house. Ryan and his mom had prepared 3 different kinds of brownies chocolate, spice and pumpkin. And they also had flat bread crackers, veggies and humus, yummo! What a treat after our trip. Then Lauren showed up with her boyfriend Kevin and we all went out to dinner.

Unfortunately Lauren had to get back to the campus so I only have this one picture with her and Kevin.

Family Night at a wonderful restaurant in Downtown

The next day Ryan and Danni met us and we took them out for lunch and then we went over to visit with Hubby’s family.

Pictures of Ryan and Dani

Dinner with the family, Hubby’s absolute favorite Mexican restaurant for nearly 30 years.

After dinner Luke and Trey started in on basketball out in the drive. Hubby enjoyed that too.

There Is No Place On Earth Like HOME

We are having the time of our lives and our trip has been just what the Dr. ordered. We spent our first two days in St Louis visiting with family. Then we went on to visit with Hubby’s sister and our nephew and his family. Our nephew and niece were due to have their little girl on the same day we arrived. With much delight, we made it the same day little Connie was born and was able to see her just hours after the delivery. That was totally not planned but such a wonderful highlight of our trip. Hubby and I now have 2 great nieces and 1 great nephew on Hubby’s side of the family. After our visit there, we were off to visit ma (Hubby’s mom) for a couple days and then we made our way home. We arrived Wednesday evening and we’re having the time of our lives and we have plans to stay here through Thanksgiving weekend.

There is just not enough words to express our joy to be back into our home and to be in the middle of all our stuff. We left here and moved up north on August 26th and have been staying in a hotel up until just two nights ago when we crawled back into our own bed. There is truly no place like home and we’re looking forward to the day when we can be back into the middle of all our stuff for a while.

I have some pictures to share but I may not get to them ‘til after our return north. So just for now, we’re taking advantage of our time together.

A Visit With Great Grandpa

This picture is of my brothers and me visiting my Great Grandpa. I’ll never forget our little visit with him that day. I still remember to this day his daughter (my Great Aunt) commenting how my little brother was “the baby”. I still remember in his own little sweet way not enjoying the fact that he had just been called “the baby”. It was at that very moment that I was so thrilled and relieved that I wasn’t “the baby”. How crazy the silly details I remember.

Feelin’ Punk

I’m feeling a little worse for wear and tear and stayed in bed until just before noon. My throat is a mess right now and I’m feeling punk as my pop would say. I went for a nice bowl of vegetable soup and water first thing and that seemed to taste pretty good. But I think I’ll be dragging for a little while. Fortunately Hubby is feeling a little better but not 100% yet. We’re both looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow with no alarm waking us before the crack of dawn.

This picture has nothing to do with this post but I just finished putting it together so I thought I’d share. This is a picture of me and my cousins in 1969. I’m the baby girl on the far left with the hair sticking up.

More Scraping Fun

I’m ever so thankful for my scrapbook program as it’s given me something to do to keep active and I’m really enjoying what few scans I do have. I have a lot more scanning to do when I get back to mom’s house! I’ve been working on a couple more scraps this afternoon and this evening and thought I’d share what I’ve been up to.

Pop Taking Us To Bed…

My Tom-Boy Days

That picture was taken the year I was in the 7th grade living on a hundred acre farm. I did everything with my brothers that year from digging fresh worms in the backyard and fishing in 4 ponds on the property and if we brought home enough fish, the fish fry was on for the night, helped care for 22,000 – that’s twenty two thousand chickens – we raised them for layers and when they got big enough to lay eggs we would gather eggs and clean eggs every day after school, there were only 75 roosters in the whole batch and we got to keep them. We moved those roosters to a little chicken coop behind the house and kept them separated from the hens. When the roosters got big enough for some really good eatin’, my brothers and I helped with the cleaning of them including plucking feathers, and helped to make them freezer ready… I played in so many barns on the property and in and out of hay lofts was a ton of fun, worked in a very large garden, helped mom can fresh veggies from the garden, made fig preserves from our huge tree in the yard and on and on…

Family Reunion

What a wonderful time we shared with ma this past weekend. Our family surprised ma with a family reunion including all her children.
There were a total of 18 including 7 grandchildren and her great grand baby.

We all gathered at the nursing home on Friday evening to surprise ma. The nurse’s aids had the Chapel available for us and when we all were situated in the Chapel they wheeled ma in. The aid asked ma… “Do you know all these people” ma was in such shock that she immediately said “no”. Upon taking a closer look at the crew which did not take a split second she began to cry tears of joy. She was so thrilled to see everyone and so very surprised.

Friday evening we took ma to the steak house restaurant down the road for a nice family dinner where we could all enjoy our meals and have a nice visit. After dinner ma was tired and wanted to rest so we left her Friday evening with a happy heart.

All of the couples and 3 of our nephews went back to the hotel where we turned Dan, Rita & Lars’ adjoining rooms into the “game rooms”. Bobby packed so many games but Pictionary was the #1 choice for the evening, we brought my large easel, white board, markers and dry eraser which was a big hit. We played Pictionary till the early morning hours with all of us practically collapsing in the party rooms. I hope our neighbors were able to sleep as it’s hard to keep a room of 9 people playing Pictionary to a soft whisper.

It was time to rise n’ shine early Saturday morning; well shall I say 7:00 am to start our day with horseback riding. Everyone was ready to hit the trail early so that is exactly what we did. Please see our horseback riding pics in the blog below. After our nice ride we came back to the hotel where we rented the conference room for the entire day and all night. The ambulance transferred ma to the hotel for us and we kept her there till 6:00 pm.

Ma, Hubby and me
My brother-in-law and sister-in-law arranged for a nice Chinese lunch and brought back a wonderful feast for all 18 of us. After our lip-smackin’ lunch we gathered around the table for some BINGO, which is ma’s favorite game. Bobby and Rita took care of the prizes for the game and everyone won at least 2 prizes each.

Chris, Jim & Ma – Notice our family playing with 2 BINGO cards each!

Our nephew calls BINGO to get yet another prize!

More BINGO fun.

Notice we are all playing with 3 BINGO cards each, that’s the way we play!

After our BINGO session Hubby moved right along with the Karaoke set that we brought. Our nephew Brian started it off with “Johnny Be Good”. Karaoke was such a big hit and everyone enjoyed that immensely.

The ‘Old Fogies’ against the 7 grandchildren in an afternoon game of Pictionary.

Later that evening Hubby and company enjoyed a Texas Holdem – Midnight Poker Tournament. Don’t let them baby blue’s fool you as Our nephew was the winning player, winning all the chips. Our nephews/brothers enjoy a checker game together.

We had a fun filled day from start to finish and we hope to do this again next year.
