The Places We Go, The People We Meet

The friends we meet along the way are truly amazing. After spending 3 weeks in a hotel, you sort of separate the old timers from the people who are on ‘vacation’. So far we’ve made friends with many couples who are not vacationing but each have their own circumstances that brought them to this hotel.

I’ll start with Donnell and Michele, they are such a warm fun couple to see each morning at breakfast and after seeing them a while we asked if they were vacationing. Come to find out, both Donnell and Michele are transferring here like us. Tonight we so happened to bump into them on our way out to dinner and we asked if they would like to join us. They agreed and what a wonderful evening we all had. Donnell is soft spoken mixed with a twist of humor and Michele seems just a little more outspoken. We spent several hours with them this evening and what a delightful night we had. We’ve already made plans to have another date with them next weekend for dinner. I’m so glad we met that cute couple.

Then there is Derrick and Lora who we’ve seen day in and day out from the time we arrived. They are such a darling couple with the cutest, well mannered little boys. They have just transferred here from Ontario Canada. This morning when I was at breakfast, Lora and I visited for over an hour. Her cute little guys are around 3 and 5 and they both have taken quite a liking to me. They were both asking for my help with juice or water or something and I was so delighted to give them a hand. At one point the littlest one was right by my side resting on my lap as though I were his mom. Oh, he won my heart over this morning.

Bob, he’s our 85 year old friend. He so proudly told me his age the other morning and he and his wife have been here since May. A huge tree fell onto their home and has done some pretty serious damage to their house and they will be here until their home is back in living conditions. I’ve never met Bob’s wife as she never comes down to breakfast with her groom. She’s quite sickly and has been in and out of the hospital on and off all summer.

And then the cute little couple (who I would say are well into their 70’s) we’ve seen from day one. All I can remember is the gal’s name and her name is Rosalie. They just told us that they are here due to a fire destroying their home. It was so sad to hear her tell us all about their home and how everything was destroyed. They were in the home when the fire started but did not realize that a major fire was already underway until it was too late. The only things that made it were the precious couple and the clothes on their backs. To be exact, she told me all she had on was her night gown and that’s it. She says her husband is the one who keeps her upbeat during this traumatic experience as he says “We’re not taking anything when we leave this world and the funny thing is, we outlasted all of our worldly possessions”. Through all of this they have managed to be the happiest little couple and she always has that pretty bright smile through it all.

Kathy, she and I struck up conversation this morning and seemed to talk the early morning away. When she asked what I was going to do on this gorgeous day, I responded, I think I’ll do a little scrapbooking, some errands and whatnot. She found that interesting and went on to tell me how she’s an artist and has some of her work in a gallery downtown. We bonded immediately and our conversation was like a river flowing from that moment on. She said “for some reason, I knew I should get to know you”. She told me about ~ Gallery Night which means they have Gallery Night every first Friday of the month and she’s invited me to come by her place this coming October for the Gallery Night.

We’ve grown to have a soft spot in our hearts for the people we rub shoulders with day in and day out. And I know we’ve already met people that we will definitely see after we part ways from here.

The Good And The Bad ~ The Bad First

Yesterday’s plans were canceled due to my need to stay in bed all day. I guess you could say I was blessed with a very good dose of food poisoning from dinner Monday evening. I woke early Tuesday morning sometime around 3:00 AM feeling ever so sick and stayed in bed until 4:00 yesterday afternoon. Due to all that sleep, I was concerned if I would get any sleep last night but by nightfall I was completely exhausted and ready for sleep.

Today dawned and I felt like a brand new person, it’s amazing just how great I felt and was reminded to never take my good health for granted. I had plans to meet my friend Jennifer at the local Starbucks where we began our morning. Then she proceeded to be my Realtor for the entire morning and breaking for a nice lunch afterward. My new and improved Realtor Jennifer took me by some fabulous places for sale and I plan to take Hubby for a gander when he gets home! Then we continued on to a couple pottery galleries in the area and that is when I began to feel just a little bit closer to my passion for pottery. And to my surprise she introduced me to this fabulous place called where I can spend as much time as I want at that studio for just a minimal fee. I’ll say Jennifer is the best Realtor and tour guide I could have ever asked for! And the best part ~ I had such a great time visiting with her!

A Day Of Errands

I have quite a few stops to make:

* Hair done
* Check out a few more Eye Dr offices for glasses
* Oil Change for my truck
* Meet Monica for lunch
* Wal-Mart Stop
* Post Office

Yesterday I made my stop at the gas pump and it cost $52.38 to fill my tank! Crazy prices at the pump these days.

Sis made it home safe and sound yesterday evening, I told her she was not here long enough but her dad and I both said we will take what we can get.

I’m having one of those all out of whack mornings. It’s hard to get back into the swing of things this morning. With last Friday being Hubby’s Friday off and having him home last weekend and Monday – Wednesday with Sis being here; it’s really hard to say what day it feels like to me, but it’s Thursday alright and I feel ready for the weekend already.

A Day With Monika

What normally would take me 20 min to get to Monika’s took me an hour and ½ . The first interstate I was going to take was closed due to an accident between two trucks. One was filled with hazardous waste so they had the interstate completely shut down. The accident happened at 4AM and the crew did not get it cleaned up till early afternoon. There was yet another accident on a different interstate that I took with a cement truck that had a flat and his cement truck turned over on the highway leaving cement everywhere. We learned from the 5:00PM news that the man in the cement truck died from the accident. How tragic for the loss of an innocent man, leaving his loving family behind.

I called Hubby with my dilemma from the first interstate where my problems began and he sent me to another interstate heading north and the next interstate heading west. When I arrived to the final interstate, the traffic was completely stopped or should I say it took 30 min for me to go ½ mile to the next exit. I called Hubby with my dilemma and he advised that I get off at the next exit. He kept asking every few min if I was there yet. I said, honey, I think I should call you when I get there as I think I’m going to be stuck here for quite some time. I called Hubby back when I was able to get off and he and the map on-line was able to guide me safely to Monika’s via the back roads and yet 1 more interstate.

When I finally arrived we said our hellos and Monika offered me a drink. We then went out on her back patio with drinks in hand to just sit chat enjoy the birds and beautiful scenery out back. That was very relaxing and took my mind off the crazy traffic of the early morning. She has the most beautiful flowerbeds with tomatoes, cucumbers, squash and loads of fresh herbs amongst her plants and bushes.

Monika fixed a fabulous lunch which consisted of fish vegetables and rice. We were able to enjoy our lunch out on the patio and do some more relaxing, chilling and chatting. The temperature was in the upper 60’s and just a beautiful day to be outside.

After our lunch settled we went on to learn a bit about knitting. I could see already that knitting would not be my “thing” and seemed far too complicated so she went on to teach me how to crochet. I like to crochet so much better as it’s something I can actually grasp.

So while I was learning my steps and getting consumed in what I was doing, Monika got all wrapped up in her knitting and we sat out on the patio crocheting and knitting till 5:00PM. It was a glorious day and the above picture is a little sample of what I learned yesterday. She let me bring it home to continue working, so I’ll see what happens. Who knows, maybe I’ll take up crochet in the evenings while Hubby and I are chilling.

Monika Comes To Visit

As some of you may recall, I met a new friend (Monika) at my pottery workshop a little over a week ago. Monica and I met last Wednesday at the studio and had a great day together. Last week I invited Monica over to spend the day. She is new to the States as she is from Germany so I told her I would meet her in town at the mall. She suggested we meet at the bookstore right across the street from the mall and our plans were all set. I had her home number and cell and she had both of mine too. I put my cell on the charger last night and everything was in place to meet at 10:00 AM. I left the house this morning at 9:30 and arrived at the Borders Bookstore around 10 min till 10:00. I waited, and waited and waited. Finally 10:15 rolls around so I thought I should give her a call to see if we are still on schedule for today. My cell was completely dead. I tried to hook it up to my car charger and still nothing. I just did not know what to do so I just sat there for another 25 min. By now it’s 10:40 and I thought I should drive around the mall to see if there was another bookstore and sure enough, there was a Barnes and Noble and I saw her car parked out front. I was so happy to see that she was still there waiting on me. We spent the day at my house visiting and had a nice little lunch together.

First Day At The Workshop

Monika, My New Friend

I don’t know where to begin! I came home rambling off to Hubby a mile a minute and have had one of my most favorite workshops EVER! I learned so many things, met a new friend and 5:00PM came way too soon!

I’m working on my pictures and it will be a while for me to get them in the album. Check back later if they are not here when you visit. My Album will include some of my fabulous friends, our great instructor Margie (who went to Japan and studied pottery) and her works and to give you a sample of my day. I can’t wait till tomorrow; there is another full day in store for all of us.

Margie demo’d so many different kinds of textures today and I am truly on cloud 9 right now. I’ve always liked adding texture to my pieces and she even took it to another level. She actually adds a very cool bottom to her casserole as seen in my picture album. Her work has inspired me further.

My new friend (Monika pictured above) is from Germany, she knows 6 languages, lived in Spain, and moved here last August. She dated her boyfriend for 2 ½ years while she was overseas and they are now engaged to get married in July. She and I just clicked from the very moment we met. There was just something about her that I just adored so we plan to see each other weekly now. She has joined the studio and I’m a member as well so we plan to meet each Wednesday at the studio and play in the mud together. She is a real gem and a pleasure to be around.

It’s really hard to put into words my feelings but I’m on a high with all that I learned plus the addition of a wonderful new friend.
