Putting Faces With Names

I love it when I can put a face to a name. Bobby always talks about the guys at work and I always get to know them before I meet them. I’ve already met quite a few of the team and last night I was able to meet several more.

Bobby’s group had visitors from Maryland in yesterday and a dinner was planned last evening at the Texas Roadhouse restaurant. Bobby made it a point to tell the guys he was bringing his wife but like so many times, I was the only wife to show up. I always tell Bobby that I don’t have to go but he always insists saying “if my wife’s not invited, I’m not invited” and he has said that (to me) from day 1. I had such a great time visiting with these guys as I felt like I already knew them.

He guarantees that he will never leave home without me if he can possibly help it so next week he’s taking me to Boston on his business trip. It’s gonna be a road trip since it’s not that far to drive.

We’re really enjoying this stage in life with the (Bobby’s) kids in college and the freedom to do these things at the drop of a hat.

In The Doll House

Today Kari And Kijsa are hosting a designing for your life… what you live, where you live, how you live party. I’m currently living in a two bedroom place with my beloved hubby while we are in the process of building our new home. I live here and play in my doll house as seen below.

Bobby calls the little 3D program I’m working on “Debbie’s Little Doll House”. I’m such a visual person as I want to get an idea of how things are going to look. I started with a blank screen in this 3D program and added the entire floor plan with the correct dimensions. I’ve also taken the dimensions of our furniture and plugged them into each piece of furniture (in this 3D model) so that I can get an overall idea of how things will fit. I was able to select the type of furniture, flooring, fabric, color and size to everything you see.

Yesterday I shared several color choices. As a matter of fact there are close to 2000 Sherwin Williams colors not to mention the thousands of other paint colors from other companies on this program. My mind feels like it’s going to pop with all the choices out there. I’m truly lovin’ this my friends as my hubby is letting me pick out all the paint! YEA!!!

Today I’m sharing different angles of the family room and kitchen. And here is what I’ve come up with so far.

Family Room in TX

My Doll House Family Room – I’ve had so much fun in here pretending. That thing above the fire place is Bobby’s tv as that’s where he wants it.

Another Angle – and notice how much brighter this picture is when I changed the way the light filters in from the outside. I didn’t change the paint color of the room, just the light source. I’m thinking this Honey Gold color is going to be the dominant color of our home.

I moved the camera up and changed the angle for a little bird’s eye view.

Kitchen in TX

View to the right – Kitchen Breakfast Bar Area – This was the first light switch I added on the far wall next to the door. I need to connect the switch to the light (in the program) to turn the light on… But I’m still experiencing some technical difficulties. I think I shall call the “Doll House” electrician.

Breakfast Bar In TX – and the little desk/cabinet area

Doll House Breakfast Bar – That’s supposed to be the desk area as I realize it doesn’t look like a desk, but it will. Work with me here – we’re just pretending in the Doll House… K?

That’s a wrap for today. If there’s a color you would like to see on any of these walls, just ask and I’ll post them.

Color My World

We’ve been busy beavers with the new and improved update on our house plans. We had another meeting with our builder Saturday and things seem to be taking shape.

I have been so engrossed in this floor plan program adding details and similar furnishings to the rooms like we had in our home back in TX. This program also allows you to change the lighting in the room as well as the outdoors. I still need to figure out how to turn the lights on in the chandelier overhead. As soon as I get that figured out, I’ll give you a peak of that too.

Today I’m demonstrating what I can do with color in the dining room.

This Olive green is winning my heart at the moment.

Singin’ The Blues – I’m quite fond of the Slate Blue Grey. I’m thinking this will look nice in our office.

The Lone Pansy

I’m taking just a smidgen of a break for lunch and thought I’d share the pansy project that I’m working on for Dreams And Beyond. I started working on this project yesterday and I pretty much have the sketch complete. Now I’m concentrating on the foundation by adding layers of color.

A Work In Progress

HTML, Art and Christmas

I just finished all the little finicky things around my site like adjusting the margins and moving my profile from the left over to the right. I’m tellin’ ya none of that went down without me throwing fits with html! I continue to say that I’m through with html and then I dive right back into the slurry mess. However, I love those light bulb moments and I believe one of these days I will embrace html.

In other news: I plan on picking up my pencils next week and I’m looking forward to drawing and getting back into my “zone”. I especially like the part that I’ll be giving this drawing to Dreams And Beyond from India.

I’m debating another free drawing and this time I get to keep something. But it will depend on how much interest there is out there to participate. I’m thinking of launching the next Christmas Gallery Days Giveway around the end of October. Here’s how it would work – I’m looking for a Christmas theme picture. Anything Christmas and the deal is the person I select once again gets the piece of art but I will get to make copies and print out our Christmas Cards this year. I think it is plenty early enough to have this project finished by the end of November but I will need a lot of interest or I will have to come up with something myself. If you have any thoughts or suggestions I’m open, talk to me.

The Cleaning Crew Is Here

My mind has been in a whirlwind of late with thoughts turning towards transformation around here. So I got out my trusty broom and dustpan and swept all the old formatting away. And scooped up a new format to provide a fresh new look.

While I had the cleaning crew at my fingertips, I decided to change the wallpaper and get things ready for autumn while I was at it. So don’t mind me while I’m sweeping around your feet, it shouldn’t take me too much longer to get situated.

And the picture for the day is one of my favorite little creatures that hang out around our place. This cute little guy was out front on the stone as I was running out to do errands yesterday. I can’t believe he held so still for his picture as they always flee the moment they see us. I think he likes me.

Monarch Butterfly Paradise

I was in beautiful Monarch Butterfly Paradise while on vacation. The monarch’s were swarming this pretty butterfly bush or at least that’s what I’ve heard this bush called.

This beautiful specimen had just landed and started fanning his wings so I shot him quick!

If it weren’t a time issue, I would have hung out a whole lot longer with these guys. They had me mesmerized for quite some time.

Road Trip Part 5 – The End

I don’t enjoy getting behind but that’s where things stand here in bloggeritaville ’til now. I made the decision to finish up our vacation without blogging and what a difference it made taking the pressure off. Now the pressure is back to get caught up, so here we go.

We spent some time with Bobby’s children and started out with Kristy. Kristy is a senior in college, is that possible? I still can’t believe that. We are proud of her as she’s pulling straight A’s in all her classes. We had such a wonderful time taking her shopping and enjoyed a delightful dinner at PF Chang’s (her choice) which we didn’t argue with, yum. We’re looking forward to spending time with her again for her graduation in May.

Bobby and Kristy

We spent a couple evenings with Ryan when he was off work. He’s the head baker of one of the Panera Bread Companies in St Louis. He is an amazing baker and whips up some of my absolute favorite pastries. He always spoils me when he visits as he takes full control of my kitchen and he makes the most amazing dishes for us. Below is a picture of Ryan and his longtime girlfriend (Danni) of I believe 3 or 4 years now and their friend Carlie. Can you tell he just woke up in this picture?

Lauren’s a sophomore in college this year and we’re so proud of her too. She’s our other daughter making straight A’s. Her classes were already underway so she drove over to spend Saturday evening with us. She chose a great Japanese restaurant that evening and we enjoyed a wonderful conversation with Lauren and her boyfriend Andy. Andy is such a sweetheart who is down to earth and loves to talk about philosophy. He’s definitely a keeper.

We spent Sunday afternoon at Bobby’s brothers (Jim, Chris and family’s) home. Chris prepared such an amazing feast and had the most amazing steaks I’ve ever had on the BBQ. Chris is like a sister to me and we never have a hard time picking up where we left off. Bobby helped his brother Jim and boys fix the go cart and they had it up and running in no time. Basketball was played and lots of visiting outside in the cool of the evening. I wanted to take pictures of everything that day but decided to just enjoy the special moments without interrupting for pictures; therefore I don’t have pictures to show of our day. But I can say that I have it all stored in my mind and I’ll never forget what a great time we all had.

Bobby and I had quite a bit of alone time sandwiched between the family gatherings and whatnot and we were also able to have some nice dinner dates just the two us. He took me back to his (now our) all time favorite Mexican restaurant from when he was just a kid (since 1998 for me). OK get this – we drove 2 hours out of our way on our way back to NY to visit Urbana-Champagne, IL for the most amazing pizza ever . It was that good my friends and well worth the drive and a second helping!

We had a great trip home and I can’t tell weather I’m glad to be back or if I want our vacation to last a bit longer. I think what I would really like is for Bobby to retire – but that’s another 20 years from now. I tried to get him to stay home with me today but he had meetings to attend. He did say he would see if he can take Friday off. I’m not ready for him to go back to work as I want him all to myself. I’m selfish that way so I’ll spend the next 20 years gettin’ over it.

Road Trip Part 4 – Take Me Out To The Ballgame

We’re in the St Louis area visiting Bobby’s family. However we are taking time for just us as we love our alone time too.

We were able to take in a St Louis Cardinal game this week. The Cardinals have been Bobby’s team ever since he was a very small child. He still remembers his sister (Rita, she’s 11 years older than Bobby) taking him to his very first St Louis Cardinal game for his 5th birthday. And he’s been an enthusiastic fan ever since.

It was such a fun night and the weather was perfect with a little cool streak at the end. We had brats, peanuts and crackerjacks as we can’t go to a game without those things. But our team didn’t score nary a point – yup, it was 12 Milwaukee Brewers to zip for the Cards. We didn’t let the score board dampen our spirits as we had a total blast cheering at the ole ball game.

Road Trip Part 3 – Worlds Greatest Pizza Discovered

For the past 11 years I’ve heard Bobby rant and rave about Chicago style stuffed pizza. It’s been 15 years since he’s had that yummy explosion of goodness in his mouth and the craving for that has never gone away. So on our drive through Urbana-Champaign, IL; he took me to one of his all time favorite pizza joints called Papa Del’s. Oh my word was it ever worth the 45 min. wait.

This is what our pizza looked like before we laid into it

A peak on the inside

It was not your regular deep dish pizza with a thick crust. The crust was the regular thickness, but shaped into a very deep pan much like how a pie crust goes into a pie pan. They place the toppings on the very bottom – for us it was mushrooms, onions and peppers. Then the nice thick layer of cheese, the pepperoni is added on top of the cheese and the sauce covers the top. Then the pizza is sprinkled with special seasonings and then one lone pepperoni was placed in the very center as the little topper.

I can officially report that I have now eaten the world’s greatest pizza. And it’s all Bobby’s fault that I crave that pizza! Hmmmm, if we could only work that 3 hour drive into our trip for another round as it doesn’t get any better than that.

The Winner Of Gallery Days Giveaway

I am pleased to announce the winner of my second drawing giveaway! The winner is – Dreams And Beyond and this is the photo I selected.

I would like to extend a great big THANK YOU to all of you who participated. This was a tough decision and took me a while to finally decide.

Congratulations, Dreams And Beyond! There are a few things I need from you in order for me to get started. I need:

• You to send me your address
• I would like in writing your permission to draw this amazing photo and attach that photo in your e-mail for me please.
• After that, you may sit back, relax and wait for your drawing to arrive.

P.S. – I thought I was going to have some free time on our vacation to draw but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen. And I’m lucky to get in a post in now and then. Not to worry, I’ll have plenty of time when we get back home and I still believe I’ll have this done by the deadline.

Road Trip Part 2 – Visit To Bobby’s Alma Mater

Founded in 1867

Bobby has always told me that one day he would take me there. We left Kristy back in Michigan to start school and drove down the road to Urbana-Champaign, IL to Bobby’s Alma Mater yesterday. Bobby gave me a tour and I felt in awe as he took my hand and led me through what used to be the place he studied. We strolled the walkways, sat underneath a huge shade tree and watched thousands and thousands of students on a high as they prepared for another school year.

I can’t begin to explain the height of joy and wonder I felt so I’m just going to share a few statistics and what pictures I do have.

Here are a few stats of the campus –

  • 559 Total buildings on 7.7 square miles (4,938 acres)
  • 28,000 undergraduate students this year
  • 9,000 graduate and professional students this year
  • 4,000 courses and more than 150 fields of study
  • 2008 – US News and World Report rated it the # 8 public university.
  • College of engineering is ranked 5th

Alma Mater

The Alma Mater has represented their motto of Learning and Labor since its unveiling in 1929. The figures clasping hands in the background represent learning and labor, and the Alma Mater in the foreground opens her arms and welcomes students with the inscription ‘To thy happy children of the future those of the past send greetings.’

Illini Union

The Illini Union was constructed 1939 – It has many purposes as it includes a 90 room guest hotel (Bobby says we’re going to have to stay there one day), food court, bowling alley, arcade room, pool hall, computer lab, and numerous study lounges. It is a place where students meet and relax, and it brought back so many fond memories for Bobby. He took me on a grand tour of that building, the inside halls were grand and I stood in awe of the massive columns stretching to the high ceiling. Each room was a showcase all of its own and I felt like I was standing on hallowed ground. I was filled to overflowing with amazement, perhaps that’s why I didn’t interrupt the moment to take pictures inside.

Altgeld Hall

Altgeld Hall – Started construction in 1896 and was completed in 1897. It was originally the library and later turned into the Mathematics Building. Bobby took all his math courses here. Altgeld Hall is in the national register of Historic places.

The sun was setting and we both continued to comment on what a delightful day we shared together.

Road Trip Part 1

We started our little road trip yesterday morning. We drove about 4 hours up the road and stopped on the American side of the Niagara Falls. We wished we had gone to the Canadian side as we were driving through Canada to go up over to Michigan anyway. But the US side is where we landed and we enjoyed the beautiful sights.

The flowers and gardens were so pretty

The sunset

And another shot of the sunset last evening.

We made our way to Ruby Tuesdays where Bobby’s daughter Kristy works. She was working last night but that didn’t put a damper on us spending time with her. We requested to be seated in her area so that we could at least visit with her during our meal. She must have told the whole staff that her parents were there as the staff kept showing up to our table as they all wanted to meet Kristy’s parents. We had such a fun relaxing time and we felt extra special as we were really catered to.

Then when we got to our room… Unbeknownst to me this is what awaited us right in the corner of our room! I love it when Bobby surprises me.

I planned to blog last evening but this thing had my attention and with that, Bobby started the water and we both enjoyed relaxing in that thing for the remains of the evening.

We have had a very busy day with Kristy and that post is for another day as we’re getting ready to start up the hot tub again this evening…
