An R & R Kinda Day

Yesterday was one of those days that Ryan and I were just in the mood to relax.  And relax is exactly what we did.

  • Ryan got to sleep in really late
  • we met up with Hubby for a nice afternoon lunch at Ryan’s choice restaurant
  • Ryan and I then hit the grocery store
  • Came home and rested some more in between both of us doing a few loads of laundry
  • Went to the mall where he scored some really good deals.

By the time we got home it was time to begin dinner as hubby was on his way.

The boys kept me company playing chess at the breakfast bar, there in the kitchen.  We are truly enjoying our visit with Ryan.

Hubby was actually multitasking as he was repairing my computer that had a major crash yesterday.  Yay, he fixed it!

We polished off the evening with a movie the boys had rented.  What a great day all the way around.

Ryan and I are having another nice slow start today, but it’s sure to be a fun one.  As I was in making another pot of coffee, I noticed this little hummingbird on the branch just outside the kitchen window.

They create such a buzz as they chase each other.  Geez, they almost took my head off this morning as I enjoyed my coffee on the back porch.  Well not really, but I did duck.  🙂

Well, it’s time I get off this computer and get on with our day.  We have a fun one planned!

Lions, Tigers and Bears! Oh My!

A day at the zoo is where we (Ryan and I) could be found.  Ryan and I hit the road at 9 as we had a 107 acre zoo to explorer.  With over 4,000 animals of more than 800 species, our day was sure to be a fun one.

The Koala Bear was one of the first exhibits – Sweet little ones getting their rest.

Cool Camel

The statue of the ancient condor – With a wing span of 7 – 10 feet

He’s just chillin’ on this beautiful day

The ever so cool Meerkat posing for her picture

W arrived just as the elephant was walking up to the feeder – He’s having lunch

So many different kinds of turtles – I have such a love for these creatures

A shot of Ryan with the turtles

He’s pretty cool

Extinct American Lion – The American Loins were about 25% larger than today’s African Lions.

We made a note of this

Sichuan Takin – Having a nice peaceful rest

 Hey beautiful you

Addra Gazelle – Hails from Africa

Lesser Kudu – From Africa – Loved his horns

The Polar Bear – My very favorite zoo animal ever!

But I’ll keep my distance

And admire their beauty and respect his strength from afar

Hello Mr. Zebra – Your stripes are precise

The beautiful flamingos

Mr. Hippo having a swim

Now he is one cool cat as long as he’s on the other side of the fence

He was way back there pacing and pacing and I could hardly get a shot.  Suppose he was hungry.

Just the two of them hanging out

We think we remember this being some sort of viper.  Check out his wild looking head in the lower left.

Hey dude, I forget your name but you’re pretty awesome looking.

Hey “Big Boy”, I forget your name too

And you are certainly one big lizard

Such beautiful flowers and tropical trees.  I just wasn’t thinking about taking pictures ’til the end.

Ryan shopping for souvenirs/gifts – He found a couple of really nice gifts

We had such a wonderful time and when it was all said and done, home was the place we wanted to be.  Actually, we were both dreaming of a nice afternoon nap and resting our feet.

Ryan’s way of chillin’ in the pergola up on that rock – He’s out there with pen, paper and coffee – Working on lyrics for a new song for his band back home.

And this concludes another great day and visit with Ryan.

The Journey

We had talked of doing a couple different things today but things can change in an instant when boys want to play in the backyard.

And play they did.  The mountain behind our home is one of the things Hubby’s wanted to conquer and Ryan was all over that again today.

So I sent them off slathered in plenty of sun screen and lots of water and away they went, off to the back 40.

So happy Hubby took pictures all along the way

And these pics make me wish I had gone too

What a beautiful journey

There was no stopping them as they focused on reaching the top.

What amazing views they had.  They even got to sign the book (see Ryan signing the book in the pic above) at the top of the mountain.  Hubby knew it was there and I’m happy they were able to find it.  Way to go guys!

It was nice of hubby to call me now and then so that I could run out back to see them.  At one point it took forever for me to find them.  Hubby told me exactly where to stand and explained where I should point my head and I finally saw both of them WaaaAY up there waving their canes.  I was filled with a rush of excitement for them.

What a nice day and I’m so happy they’re making such great memories.

We enjoyed a nice meal this evening and Ryan gave the restaurant a 10 out of 10 score for his meal.  I’d say he’s had a 10 out of 10 day.

Life’s journey takes effort but the prize is where to focus.

Day One With Ryan

It was important to start his vacation by sleeping in.  After all, vacations should revolve around plenty of rest, no?

After some much needed sleep Ryan and I headed over to pick up hubby (at work) for a nice little family lunch date.  At some point between lunch and dropping hubby off, hubby and Ryan both noticed these wheels.  Ryan said it looked like the wheels were was from Mad Max.  Crazy!

After lunch, Ryan and I did a little food shopping and then back home for the afternoon.

One of the things Ryan wanted to do upon his arrival last evening was to climb the mountain behind our home.  Another thing he wants to do is go home with a nice tan, thus the swim trunks.

After about an hour, I dug out the binoculars and started looking for him.  And about every 30 min or so I continued to look but could not spot him out there.

So I took a few pics in the garden and enjoyed the great outdoors in the backyard.

It was sometime around 5 when I saw Ryan and my did he ever look drained from his afternoon hike.  But there is no stopping him, as he declares he wants to hike it again.  He loved it!

Soon hubby was home and dinner was in the works.  Ryan loves the kitchen and cooking.  Seeings he’s vegetarian, he likes cooking as he wants to know exactly what he’s eating.  Such a smart one he is.  Hubby’s already hitting him up to make us some bread.  He’s been baking for Panera Bread for many years and now going to college full time.  We’re so proud of him.

Now he and hubby are off to the “Toy Store” aka Fry’s Electronics.  I’m quite certain the boys will find something they just got to have.

It’s been a great day all around and we’re looking forward to a nice fun family day tomorrow.

We Have Company

Our Ryan (hubby’s son) flew into town last evening and what a joy it’s been visiting.  We were all ready for a bite to eat and Macaroni Grill was just the place to get the job done.

Our evening was spent around the pool table and hubby and I both enjoyed shooting rounds, visiting and catching up with him.

Plans for the weekend were discussed and great memories are sure to be made.  Now if time would stand still for a little while…

Hat Rack

A few weeks ago hubby asked Mr. Lee to hold his pool stick.  And Mr. Lee continues to keep up his end of the bargain.  Sorry for posting the same pic again but here’s the visual in case you forgot.

Let me introduce to you Mr. Lee’s friend (I’ll have to ask hubby his name).

Anyway, I just noticed for the first time ever that hubby used Mr. Lee’s buddy to hold his hat…like so.

This just tickled me to no end when I saw it and I think hubby thought it would.  He must have put it there last night after I had gone to bed.  I have no idea his motive.  Whatever it was I’m grinning ear to ear.  Was it that he wanted me to laugh?  Did he just stick it there for the fun of it?  Was that initial D just for me?  Sure, he’s had this hat but it’s not one he normally wears.  I’m so confused and can’t wait to ask what was behind this.

In other news.  I just got home from having my hair colored.  Boy it needed it!  I feel I’ve earned every single white hair, now I like to dress them up!

I passed by the roses in the garden and I stopped right in my tracks, turned around and gave them my utmost attention.

I love the free cheer I received

I’m so smitten that I may have to just go pick him and place him by the kitchen sink.

But first things first.  I must work before I play, so I’m off to shoo away the dust bunnies and mop my floors.

Nothing But Blue Skies

From here through November, this is what is in our forecast.  At least that’s what they tell us in these parts.

Here’s our house top on the lower right.  That mountain out back always looks a bit larger from the front than when we’re out back.

A swanky bird feeder I noticed in the hood today

and this feeder with part of our roof in the background

It does a body good to breath the fresh air, soak in the blue skies and enjoy what we have along the way.

Dates With Hubby

Dates with hubby are some of the things I look forward to on weekends.  Actually what I look forward to most is our time together.  And this weekend was exceptional.  We pretty much hung out at the house + got a few things done + we did shoot some pool and had some really good matches + I enjoyed reading on the back porch + the weather around here hovered beautiful mid to low 70’s by mid day = a very enjoyable weekend.

So yesterday hubby mentioned he had a craving for Islands.

It’s a charmer with a true island feel inside out.

Hubby scoured the menu to find the perfect dish

While I already knew what I wanted

The grilled veggie tacos were so fresh and good!

Our dinner conversation drifted to our end of the summer plans.  Company will arrive this week, then hubby will be off on business a few days and our last summer hurrah before autumn.

We have so much to look forward to but the plan is to take it one day at a time.  Each day is an opportunity to make a lasting moment, make it special.

From The Kitchen Sink

The kitchen is one of those rooms in the house that should “always” be open to the rest of the home.  That is a true statement according to me.  That’s a fact and should never ever cross the line for two reasons.  Reason number one:  The cook should never feel they are in a box and reason number two:  The cook should never feel they are in a box.  Just so ya know.

However, when we moved to this place (May 2010) it was not the case.  There are two entrances to the kitchen and both have swinging doors, not exactly my idea of “open”.  See my reasons (above) for not wanting to be in a box.

But the view from the kitchen sink makes all my preconceived ideas of what I thought would be ideal to one of embracing a little more flexibility.  I certainly don’t feel like I’m off in a box and I’m still learning that there is value in flexibility.  I do love the open feel, no box here!

Flexibility is good.  Sometimes we just might be surprised if we give the things that may not be what we had in mind a try.  Great things are bound to happen!

Cool Friday

A cool Friday at our house is when:  It’s Hubby’s Friday off + Sleeping in ’til 10:30 + Abundant sunny skies + 74°F at high noon = A Very Cool Friday!

Hubby was in the mood for bacon and eggs around 11:30 and I was in the mood for a summer salad around 1:00. It’s just the way we roll.

We’re having one of those very relaxing days where there’s nothing big planned. Hubby’s watching his recorded shows and I’m catching up on all the blogs I follow. And when the mood strikes, we might even get something done.

Happy Friday and Happy Weekend Everyone!

A Few Of My Favorite Things

I’m not what you would call a garage/estate sale junkie.  But when I happen on one by chance, I LOVE to see what they have.

So on my way home last week, I just happened on an estate sale a few doors down from our house and I couldn’t help but want to stop and have a look.

These little napkin holders were .50 cents each.  I didn’t think they would break the bank, so these were my big purchase.

I also purchased 4 paperback novels at .50 cents each.  I figure I’ll have some new reading material for our upcoming trip.

Hubby asked Mr. Lee (as he calls him) to guard his pool stick.  Mr Lee is “The Man” for the job.  And it’s now one of my new favorite things, makes me smile.

Better than a birdbath – I enjoy watching birds out the front window frolic in the fountain each day.  They really do make a big splash!  Then they hop up on the palm above the fountain to shake ~ shake ~ shake.

What my day/weekend looks like:

Got the handy man over today to fix a couple things.  I’m putsin’ around trying to get the cleaning done before the weekend.  And tomorrow is Hubby’s Friday off, I’m looking forward to our nice long weekend!  We have to have the house (more along the lines of the guest bedroom) in shape as company (Ryan, hubby’s son) arrives next week for a little vacay.  Happy Weekend Everyone!

A Smoothie For Hubby

A few days ago hubby mentioned how he was in the mood for a smoothie. So today I picked up the two components that make up his favorite smoothie.  Strawberries and navel oranges, period, that’s it.  I freeze the berries and add them with an orange, he loves it.

All ready to be cleaned – One, actually two of these guys were taste tested, so good!

All cleaned and ready to pop in the freezer

After cleaning all those berries, I was so in the mood for a smoothie for lunch.  So I scratched my original lunch plan and went with a concoction of 1 cup vanilla soy milk, spinach, pineapple, strawberries and blueberries.

It tasted even better than it looks!

Now off to the laundry pile.  I can assure you, the picture would not be pretty.  Laundry and ioning here I come!

Happy Anniversary To Us

We had such a special time together on our anniversary.  We did a few more things around the house and had such a great dinner date.

We made reservations in advance requesting a window seat.  We enjoyed the cool fresh air as the dining room windows were open.  We also watched several dolphins jump and play along the coast.  It was such a fun relaxed setting.

Warm fresh bread was served, oh so good!  Then we enjoyed the artichoke heart fritters for our appetizer. Wish I had taken a picture, definitely something we’ll get again.

For our salad course, we both had the Apple and Candied Walnut Salad.  Great Choice!

For Hubby Entree, he had the Maine Lobster Bake with garlic chips, carrot and red potato hash.  Such a pretty plate.  He was so happy with his choice.
I had the Macadamia Nut Crusted Salmon mirin wasabi reduction, baby bok choy and  hon shimeji mushroom stirfry.  Yum, no dogie bag needed here!

Dessert followed ~ Hubby had the Key Lime Cheesecake, he said it was really good.  How pretty too!

I had the Crème Brulèe – I took several pics because it looked so good.  It was amazing!

We went out back after dinner to get a pic for us to remember our evening together.

Then headed back home.  I love our home with beautiful ocean views to these amazing views.  Check out the dam!

What a pretty drive home!

I’m blessed to have the love of my life to share life’s journeys and to make many wonderful memories along the way.

A Trip Of Work And Play

Hubby and I took a trip to St Louis a couple weekends ago to visit family.  We had such a great time and even had time to squeeze in a Cardinals game!

Ryan, Lauren, Hubby and I enjoy the game.

Our handsome Ryan. He’s such a genuine young man with a great big heart.

Our Beautiful Lauren. She has grown up to be such a beautiful young lady inside out.

Root, root root for the home team. What a great game! Especially in the 9th inning when the Cardinals rally from their deficit to beat Dodgers, 5-4!

We polished off the weekend with family, then last Monday we hit the road for Indy for hubby’s business meetings.

I truly enjoyed staying in the heart of the city as I was able to scoot (walk) around town (while hubby worked) without having to deal with parking.  As a matter of fact we walked to dinner every night and hubby was the only one in a car (to and from work) while we were there.

Just 2 blocks from our hotel was the Indiana Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument. It is a 284 ft 6 in structure with incredible statues surrounding all 4 sides.

Heard the beautiful top of the hour chime from this church across the street.

Amazing detail of the monument

Just one block from the hotel was this interesting Artsgarden that stands 17′ over an intersection in Indy. Such an innovative use of space.

Quite creative use of “vinal 45 records” This piece had so much dimension and creative serendipity. I couldn’t seem to get enough of this piece of art.

I used the picture on the right to show the many layers. Still hard to grasp the real deal here.

 Cool table tops

More art. I found the sculpture (top right) to be whimsical, the medium is metal.

My Cup Runneth Over, bottom right ~ had colorful jewels attached all over the background. Pretty neat.  If you click on the pic to make it larger, you too can see if you look close.

And I just liked the colorful painting on the left.

This was my hubby one evening after dinner.

Weber Grill was amazing! I had no idea this restaurant existed, now I know how good it is.

We left Indy last Thursday evening and pointed our nose in the direction of Champagne, IL (aka hubby’s old stomping grounds from his college days). And his very favorite pizza joint to date! The Chicago stuffed pizza was so delicious!  After our fill of pizza we made our way back to St Louis.

The sunset along the way

The Cross Foundation has completed a 198 foot Cross at the intersection of Interstates 57 & 70 in Effingham, Illinois. Each time we pass by we marvel at this cross and size.

I Had a very unique experience on our way back to the hotel one evening. I captured a pic of lightning in the background of the arch. We passed through St Louis during a storm and I didn’t realize I captured lightning ’til I downloaded the pics.

We had a great time with family last weekend but I got so lazy taking pics.  I’ll just keep those wonderful memories and treasure those good times.

~ The grass is greener at home ~ It’s so good to be home in every way. Pics taken in the backyard the other day.  There truly is no place quite like home.

Old Friends Continued

We picked up again last evening with Brian and family (hubby’s old friend from high school and college).  We met over at the hotel where they were staying and enjoyed a nice stroll to dinner.  We had a yummy meal and then walked from there down to the boardwalk along the beach.

A nice little family picture

I was determined to get at least one good shot of each of the kids.  But it turns out I could not pick a favorite so I made them each a little page of their own.

Their cute 8 year old gymnast.  Sure wish I could have taken pictures of all her amazing stunts.

Their lively outgoing 3 year old (twin)…too cute!

What a cute bright eyed little man (twin) filled with such zest for life.

Hubby had his hands full juggling the twins.  The one down below didn’t want to let go of her turn.

This pic makes me smile.

Happy Sisters

The beach/boardwalk just before dark.

We went up to their room for a little visit and enjoyed the pretty view from their balcony.

We also watched the luau down below

Enjoyed the music and dance

Then said goodbye to our friends.

What a lovely evening and we look forward to visiting them and look forward to their return to see us next year.
